old story. Oct 1982, out to dinner in SF for my b-day, get a call from college roommate at the restaurant, they come get me to take the call, tells me we scored and will upset highly ranked ASU!!! Go back to dinner, finish dinner, turn on the post game show on the radio on the drive home, they are talking about a "character building game", I'm thinking you do not win a "character building game" and sure enough we scored and left about a minute on the clock and ASU scored........fortunately no heart attack, just great disappointment......

I re-watched the 2017 debacle to refresh my memory and I had had the following observations.
1) Rashaad Penny was a very special running back. Although their o tackles did sometimes get a ridiculous amount of push on our D line, especially our ends, Penny was a monster. Another playmaker was Mikah Holder. They are both gone. We actually got a lot of sacks on them. It’s the most sacks I recall D getting in 2017. And supposedly, they’re going to be much better this year. On the flipside, horrible Harry is gone. So I could see it being pretty close to the same amount of points as last year. Maybe 14 to 17 points for San Diego, assuming the lights don’t go out during a timeout call.
2) Watching our offense, it was so incredibly painful to watch. This must’ve been Chryst at his absolute worst. He threw 45%, under 100 yards, two interceptions. When he wasn’t getting sacked, he was throwing it to the opposing team, or into the dirt, while missing his reads. San Diego prepared some well-timed tricks, especially with blitzing, but sometimes we just screwed up. Even Love missed a fair number of blocks, that lead to sacks. Presumably, his pass blocking will be NFL-ready this year. And anyway, we shouldn’t need to pass during this game anyway. I think the offense should be much more successful earlier this year. I think there’s a difference when you’re discovering a player like Bryce Love, and you’ve already discovered him and you know what you want to do with him. Even 2015, with McCaffrey, started slow. And that was a monster offense by mid season. In 2016, the offense started pretty fast, even though we had a new quarterback and O line. McCaffrey did well against Kansas State. And USC. I think part of it is having a superstar that you know, and he was ready at an elite level on day one of the season. So I think love opens the season the way McCaffrey was dominant from day one of the 2016 season except in 2018 we have a monster returning line and future nfl returning receivers, monster returning tight ends, and a better quarterback with some experience. I think we start fast. Assuming people are healthy, it’s a rare game this offense doesn’t score 30+ points. This shouldn’t be one of them.

I'm not sure there's a defense in the country that can stop our offense. It's that loaded.
I'm also not sure our defense can stop a good offense, but thankfully SDSU doesn't have the same offense as last year.

Stats be damned. His absolute worst was Oregon State. That was just embarrassing. His late touchdown was a prayer that was answered.

I just cannot get over how many 5 to 10 yard passes he threw that landed 5 to 10 yards away from the receiver. I have never been more frustrated at Shaw for not pulling a player than I was in that game. I felt like Costello must have broken some sort of team rule that he refused to put him in.

I, admittedly, know next to nothing about the SDSU offense this year, but given their recent history of success running the ball I would assume they'll elect to make that their primary mode of attack against our defense. It'll probably be close going into the 4th quarter, but I think Stanford's weapons will shine late in the game to (sort of) run away with it.

I've not followed much of the preseason discussions, though I've read that nothing will be able to stop our loaded offense this year. Well one thing can. Play calling. I predict that for whatever reason, play calling will be very conservative in this game and we'll see a whole lotta Love. He'll get 200 plus and kick off the Heizmann hype. We'll eek out a win by less than 10 points. Angst will be very high here regarding the less than imaginative play calling by Davita. . . .

Stanford keeps it very vanilla on defense so that they have all kinds of tricks to show freshman USC QB JT Daniels next week. The Cardinal offense isn't terribly flashy but shows a good balance between pass and run plays. Stanford special teams don't necessarily shine this game, but should be elite this season.

For this first game, I will accept entries not entered on the form. If post entries differ from form entries, form entries will take precedent. The rules are still being discussed. Your input is appreciated. This year, there will be physical prizes for winners (TBA).

I prefer that the winner be the person who chose the winner and was closest to the actual score, all entries that chose the correct winner should be ranked above all those who didn't, and those who didn't chose the correct winner will be ranked according to who came closest to the actual score. I am open to suggestions/debate.
