Womens Soccer Davidson out

I say we cease scheduling UNC OOC games if their team's primary objective is to take our star players out of contention for the post-season. Total BS.
Does WSoc have the same red-shirt rules as WBB, where you can obtain a medical red-shirt if you've played less than 1/4 of the season?

1/3 is the rule and yes all sports have it. But the chances of a National Team starter foregoing the Olympics is nil and none.

Not to mention WWC next year, given rehab.
Damn, I was hoping the boot was for a high-ankle sprain or strain, not a break, even though that's what I first thought when she went down.
As an aside, one interesting thing for me as a keeper has been watching the incredible shrinking shinguard over the last few years. It used to be from right above the ankle, such that they often were combined with ankle protection, to a free floating pad much higher up the shin. While most of the field players I know like the smaller guards, I've been worried about the space below them but above the boot as a vulnerability, and that's what shot through my mind when I saw the initial replay.
As a keeper whose shins get nailed mostly on going down and attacking the ball (which leads to a pretty random contact point on the length of my shin), I've been trying to find a more protective/larger guard, and they just aren't making them any more.
Oh, and, in line with 2006, f$ck Anson Dorrance and the Tar Holes. Schedule UVa, or Duke, or any other traditional East Coast power if you want. But after Boissiere, and Davidson, and Pabon, not to mention the fact that we have more than enough powerhouses on the West Coast now, I don't think there's a need to play the University of Non-existent Classes.

A real pity. I too was hoping for a sprain and the apparatus around her ankle at this weekend's games gave me some hope, though her using crutches to walk didn't. I had been hoping 4 to 6 weeks, back in time for the NCAAs but missing the World Cup qualifying. Damn, damn, damn.
OTOH, Naomi Girma is playing SO well that we don't lose nearly as much as one would expect from losing a college player who's starting on the USWNT. In some respects, maybe what we lose is the chance to move Tierna into mid in place of Sam Hiatt - not that Sam is bad but Tierna would be better.
I think and hope that Sam will be back for Friday. I suspect she got a broken nose (but no foul according to my least favorite ref of all time Baldomero Toledo - I've probably seen him as center ref in about 5 or 6 Quakes matches over the years and he always stinks). Unless she's in the concussion protocol, I hope to see her back, perhaps with a protective mask.

Agree on not scheduling UNC. And if we take this step, I hope somehow other top teams take notice. Makes me angry whenever I think about it, a reckless dangerous unnecessary foul that would not have resulted in anything had she managed to kick the ball anyway. The circumstances were so egregious one I'm sorry to say I've at least thought about it possibly being intentional. It was certainly an I-don't-care-if-she-is-injured-by-this foul.
It is possible that, if the fracture was up above the ankle and her ankle ligaments were not damaged, a break might actually be better than a severe ankle sprain in the long run because it will heal fully and be as strong as before. A severely sprained ankle will always be weaker and subject to re-injury. But I don't think she will play again this season for us. She should be healing and rehabbing for the upcoming World Cup. I hope the time away, and missing the qualifiers, will not hurt her chances of playing/starting in the World Cup.

Davidson will miss World Cup qualifying (and the rest of the NCAA season, of course), but she should be back healthy for the World Cup itself and the friendlies leading up to it. A bummer for her that she might lose her USWNT starting spot because of this, if only because it's difficult to come back from a serious injury and immediately jump into playing 90 minutes for the national team.
We can expect her back for next season at Stanford, of course, but that is her academic senior year, and I don't think we can reasonably expect to see her in a Stanford jersey after that, redshirt this year or not. She'll have Olympic qualifying in February 2020 (and presumably a spate of friendlies leading up to it), and she'll have the Olympics that summer. If she wants to still be Jill Ellis's first-choice center back next to Becky Sauerbrunn, then the more competition the better--and the NWSL season starts in April. She'll undoubtedly be one of the top few players taken (should really be the #1 player off the board given her national team credentials, but some team might be in desperate need for a striker, who knows). Most NWSL players make a pittance, but the USWNT players can make some decent money when they play in the league (under the new CBA, she'd be in line to make north of $200,000 once she goes pro, not including bonuses for national team successes). To expect her to forego that kind of money (and the potential Olympic bonus on top of that, even if she wins) so she can come back for a 5th year in fall 2020 when she already has a NCAA title under her belt just isn't realistic.
If I'm in her shoes, I take the fact that I won't have practice obligations this fall as an opportunity to add a class and try and get my credits up so I could graduate after fall quarter next year, not have to worry about school during Olympic qualifying, and then jump right into the NWSL season and the pre-Olympic national team friendlies. (Or just stop out and come back for fall quarter 2020 and 2021 if her academic schedule would be too unmanageable to try and graduate early. Whatever works for her!)

So agree Tree. Davidson has to now think of herself first and I don’t blame her at all. A great player an NCAA champion and we hope a World Cup and Olympic champ.
