Don't know the details yet. The amount is greater than Dykes was schedule to make. Every coach not being fired gets an extension when there is one year left on their deal. They buyout is the only thing that matters.

Wilcox is 0-2 as HC against Shaw, including all but scoreline dominant loss at home with the best defense Cal has had in several years. I will believe Cal is a Pac-12 North contender when they prove they are a Pac-12 North contender.

Wilcox was set to earn an average of $2 million over the course of the five-year contract he signed upon taking the job in the winter of 2017.

The new deal pays him an average of $3.25 million, according to a source, slotting Wilcox in the middle tier of Pac-12 coaches.

Crucially, the deal features an increase of approximately $600,000 for the compensation pool for coordinators and assistants.

I guess I'm still deluded because I don't think this contract does much if anything in terms of keeping him. Wilcox is going to have multiple opportunities if Cal has another good season, any of which will pay him more than this. Doubtful it will cost him anything to leave any time he wants, and if it does then his new employer will cover that.

My take is you are in wishful thinking mode. The evidence and the landscape bely your assumptions here.

Everyone was convinced Cal couldn't keep Tedford when he was a hot commodity. Cal paid what it took to keep him. Now, the financial realities Cal faces make it imperative football be a legit program supported by donors. Given the catastraf*ck that Cal MBB is right now, with fans and donors both pulling the plug, Cal's admin knows it can't lose credibility with its highly skeptical fan and donor base by allowing a coach like Wilcox to walk. He has taken one of the least talented rosters in the conference and turned into a bowl team that was within couple plays of 9-3 or maybe even 10-2. They are seeing to it he is paid competitively and that the assistant coach budget is no longer the lowest in the conference. Wilcox is an asset donors will invest in.

Cal football isn't a Top-10 program, but it has shown on multiple occasions that it can be. Given how deep-pocketed Cal donors are, how badly they want to win, the new financial realities the whole Athletic Department faces, and that Chancellor Christ has thrown her support behind investing in football, the opportunity exists for Cal to keep Wilcox and sustain a commitment to the football program like it rarely has.

That's it?   There are schools that play coordinators almost that much money.

If Wilcox wins a bowl this season, and gets UCB to a bowl next season he will be gone.

Why stay?  If he can get UCB to back-to-back seasons with 8 wins, imagine what HE thinks he could do at a program that actually cares about winning in football?

Wilcox is being paid just a bit less than Chip Kelly.  Shaw isn't getting paid very much more in the scale of CFB coach salaries.

of course Kelly is still being paid by the 49ers so his UCLA salary offsets what they owe him (not sure if the Eagles are still paying him or not)

In 2018, Kelly is scheduled to earn around $6.5 million, which is what the 49ers owed him, but approximately $3.125 million of that is coming from UCLA. In 2019, Kelly is due approximately $7.7 million, with $3.75 million of that coming from UCLA.

https://www.ninersnation.com/2017/11/28/...ers-offset

in the year ending 31 Aug 2017 Shaw's reported comp on Stanford's form 990 (last one I could find) was $4.3m

I don't know how Wilcox, or anybody at Cal, can expect to be better than the 4th choice in their own division for the forseeable future; behind Stanford, Washington and Oregon. And there's WSU as long as Leach is there. If Wilcox wants to win championships, that will be difficult at Cal, unless he can arrange to transfer Cal to the Pac 12 South.

As Utah proved this year, you don't have to out-recruit SC and UCLA. You just have to execute better on the field. Every team in the South has won the division at least once (SC and LA twice). UW, Stanford and Oregon are the only teams to have won the North. So yes, given even Wazzu still hasn't gotten over the hump in the Pac-12 North, and everyone has won a division title in the South, I would take my chances competing against SC and LA.

They need a QB desperately. And about 20 better offensive players. They have recruited a bunch of bodies but no stars.
