Taylor tutored Browning at Folsom. 220 TD’s to set a national record. Big loss for the Utes. He has a September buzzsaw with ASU, Fresno and Eastern Washington in his first month. Ralston played at Cal. One can dream................

Troy was “strongly encouraged” by Whittingham to take the Sac State. Don’t know for sure that Whit would’ve fired him if push came to shove, but one doesn’t ordinarily take six-figure paycuts voluntarily.

Specifically, Taylor was making $525K at Utah. Sears was making $175K at Sac State. They might've gone up a bit for Troy but nowhere remotely close to what he was bringing in from the Utes.

I would think that in terms of "stepping stone" being able to bring college head coaching experience (even if not at a FBS team) and coordinator experience at a power 5/FBS team is probably a pretty well-rounded CV for an FBS head coaching experience. Of course, if your former head coach can't vouch for your coordinating acumen, then you might run into trouble.
But my guess is that if he is successful as a head coach at Sac State, he would be in line for a head coaching gig in FBS.

Here's a weird thought -- It seems to me that coaching at a non FBS school might be harder than at a prominent FBS school because you don't have the "recruiting brand weapon" that the football factories do. You have to win with what you've got, which for the most part is not superstar level of talent coming out of high school. At the same time, you don't have as much pressure on you as a high-profile job like, say, UCLA or U$C.

Traditionally, you have a much better chance of landing a FBS HC gig as a FBS coordinator as opposed to an FCS HC. This year's cycle was a bit of an anomaly in that we saw 4 FCS HCs land FBS HC jobs (NDSU, JMU, Chattanooga and Austin Peay) compared to 9 FBS coordinators - only 1 (Mike Locksley) of whom had previous HC experience. Usually, the numbers are even more unbalanced in favor of FBS coordinators. For example, last year 9 FBS coordinators landed FBS HC jobs compared to only 1 FCS HC. In 2016-17, there weren't any FCS HCs who made the move up.
For ADs, these hires are all about winning the press conference and it's hard to get a fan base fired up over hiring a coach from a school they've never seen play on TV. Chris Klieman has won three national championships and is poised for a fourth in five years at North Dakota State. His overall record at NDSU is 68-6! Yet K State fans were ready to riot when his hire was announced last week. They would've rather hired Leavitt or Brent Venables because they're familiar with Oregon and Clemson.
Personally, I'm just glad that Bowlsby took a chance on an FCS guy back in 2007.

When the FCS playoff bracket expanded to 24 teams a few years ago, the Pioneer League was granted an automatic berth but its representative is always at a brobdingnagian disadvantage compared to scholarship programs.
