My 2 cents: the GUE was the turning point. JH made us all believers, but most importantly he made the team believe in itself. I can’t recall seeing mention of any of our coaches other than than JH leading our team in 50 pushups. Maybe that’s easy leadership but IMHO it worked.

There were a lot of heroes in that game but Luck wasn’t one of them.

And remember Luck was only the 3rd QB offered by JH that year. IIRC Dayne Crist was the first choice.

Don't get me wrong -- Luck is clearly one of the greatest Stanford QBs ever.  But JH got the team to beat U$C in the Coliseum as 47-point underdogs with Tavita Pritchard as the QB.  And it was under JH that the TWU tradition started.  

My point about the offers is (thankfully) we'll never know what would have happened had Crist (or Landry Jones, who I think was the #2 offer) been at the helm.  And JH seemed to often give out offers before someone had been accepted, anyway.  But JH was able to get the most out of the talent he had, whether it was Tavita or Luck.  Yes, Luck was part of that legacy, but not the biggest IMO.
