Tiger Woods likely agrees with me:
They need to change the format for the US Amateurs.
Eighteen holes is too small a sample
to determine the
best golfers in the America.
I saw this first hand in my sophomore year in high school
I halved with the number one player in our state.
I was not in his class.
I halved when I got a great break in five.
I hit a ball long into a creek behind the green, flung my club to the ground,
and looked up to see the ball had kicked hard off a rock in the creek and was rolling back
within six feet of the pin,
On 18, and by one foot, he OB’d his second shot.
I won the hole with a bogey.
And, as I recall, Tiger trailed all three of his US Amateurs after 18 holes,
but won—and deservedly.
Make stroke play matter more, and make match play more a true test
of each golfers’ real level of skill.
18 hole match play seems a perfect example
of the problem with small samples,
and the “on any given” day problem.
One, cut at 48 after round two.
at 32 after round three, and at 16 after four,
This makes stroke play more exciting, and sets up rounds of 16, eight, four, and two,
that can be played at 36 holes.
