I don't see where the SEC, B1G, or B12 have had to make that compromise.
The SEC's kick-off times this week:
Alabama/Miss State (noon EST/9 AM PST)
Florida/Missouri (noon EST/9 AM PST)
Georgia/Aubrn (3:30 EST/12:30 PST)
Kentucky/Vanderbilt (3:30 EST/12:30 PST)
LSU/Ole Miss (7 pm EST/4 pm PST)
South Carolina/TAMU (7:30 pm EST/4:30 pm PST)
The Pac-12 kick-off times this week are:
Stanford/WSU (1:30 PST/4:30 EST)
ASU/OSU (4:30 PST/7:30 EST)
UCLA/Utah (5 pm PST/8 PM EST)
Arizona/Oregon (7:30 PST/10:30 EST)
USC/CAl (8 pm PST/11 pm EST)
Basically, both the SEC and Pac-12 fit their games in three time windows:
An early time window between noon and 1 local (SEC 2 games, Pac-12 1 game)
A middle time window between 3:30 and 5 local time (SEC 2 games, Pac-12 2 games)
A late time window between 7 and 8 local time (SEC 2 games, Pac-12 2 games)
The only real difference is the time zone that the game is played in. A late game (7:30/8) in the Pacific time zone means a very late kick-off on the east coast and an after midnight ending. This obviously sucks if you are a Pac-12 fan and live on the East Coast. On the other hand, if you are an SEC fan living on the West Coast, get ready to tailgate at 8 am for a 9 am kick-off, if that is what you do. In the days before a gazillion TV channels looking for content, there were probably more SEC games kicking off a little later, and probably few at noon (especially in the early fall). But television channels have to get their games in, and spread them out so you can watch football from noon to well after midnight, so that has pushed SEC games earlier, and it has pushed Pac-12 games later.
And as far as payout, remember both the SEC and Big10 gave up half of their conference television channels in order to get that better distribution. It probably was worth it for them, but I don't think it can be said that they didn't compromise.
