As of April 6, South Korea, country of 50 million, has just over 10K cases and fewer than 200 deaths. I understand they jumped on it hard immediately, tested many people very fast, and never had to shut down. Their strategy has been called 'test and separate.' They had early cases just about same as US, with vastly better results.

• Is this useful to us now? Can we learn something from it?
  
• Should we be following this lead in secondary cities that still have low numbers?
  
• Is it even feasible? Would we even have the option, since it took major testing, and it's not clear that in this country we have enough testing capacity, even today, still, after months of this.

I think that's what concerns many of us.  That we might not have the capacity to do major testing.

Most of the early local infections were transmitted from patients who were being actively monitored because of recent travel (Patients 3, 5, and 6). Patient 3, who had subclinical symptoms, transmitted SARS-CoV-2 infection to Patient 6, who in turn transmitted it to Patients 10, 11, and 21. During his stay in Japan, Patient 12 had been exposed to a person with confirmed Covid-19. However, he was not screened in the quarantine area at Gimpo International Airport in Seoul, South Korea, because South Korean officials had not been informed about the contact. Patient 12 appears to have subsequently infected Patient 14.

In contrast, by the time cases were detected in the US, there was already community spread and it was only detected because patients in a nursing home in Washington were dying and due to the persistent of doctors who were treating a hospitalized patient outside Sacramento who were told multiple times that the patient didn't qualify for testing.

Some other info that may useful to any other newcomers....

First, this board is primarily for discussing Stanford sports.  Please read the board rules & other info.  Some of us have been here years, and we've mostly been able to keep things civil, even if we disagree.  (There have been people that got their hand slapped, and there have been people banned.)  The common interest in Stanford sports helps.  Occasionally there are fans of other teams that join us, and they must always be treated with respect.   Many people here, but not all, are Stanford alumni.   A lot know each other.  There is a wide geographic distribution and age range.

The COVID-19 topic originally was a single thread in the CARDboard C-House.  That covered lots of different topics.  After a 670 postings in that topic, the admins made its own forum with the capability of having multiple threads.   You will see that original topic (now locked) as "Covid-19 considerations" near the end of this forum's threads.

You can search for words in the forum by using the search at the bottom of the page.  I searched for "Korea".  Among the results was this link to an earlier post, somewhat similar to yours.

As with any of forum on any website, there are probably many who only read it.  I understand that, but don't be shy.  If you have something useful to contribute, please do.   For COVID-19, we have several posters in the medical field that provide the best insight.  Whether the field is economics, politics, statistics, athletics, there are people here who have professional expertise.

Because of the close tie between how COVID-19 affects us individually and collectively, and how it is managed by the various levels of government, the admins have obviously chosen to loosen the strictures against political discussions.  A lot of what is being said under COVID-19 would not be allowed when discussing sports.  Even so, personal attacks will get someone censured or banned.   If you post something and then think better of it, you can edit it or delete the post entirely (but it is better to take a breath and think about it before ever hitting "Post").  If you have a problem with someone, try using Personal Messages or discuss it with an admin.  Don't make it public.
