Just discovered the Cardboard today! I graduated in 97 (fr - Alondra, so/jr/sr - ATO). Was on the sailing team at Stanford, and loved being part of the Sixth Man while I was there.
I was a bootleg member for a while but let my subscription expire this summer, and now I figure I'll wait until the end of the season before I re-up (not that I believe in jinxes or anything). I was primarily a lurker there, but who knows, maybe I'll post more here. :)

I got my Ph.D. at Stanford in the late 90s, and went to lots of basketball (men's and women's) and women's volleyball games, along with a fair number of football games and a smattering of other sporting events. Following that, I spent roughly a decade in Austin, TX, learning what true football obsessiveness is. And I moved a couple of years ago to DC, which is a college sports wasteland at the moment.
I'm not sure how this fall (or even this game that's now headed to overtime) will turn out, but I'm enjoying the ride so far.

Welcome Roberton! We're keeping the Stanford flame alive and kicking for you back in Austin should you decide to visit or come back. We had a group of about 20 staying all the way through last night's game in the outdoor chill despite a thundering bluesy rock show from nearby Threadgill's.Â

Hi everyone! I suppose it's past due for me to introduce myself... I started lurking back early in my undergrad, when our men's basketball team was #1 in the nation (though let it be known that I was a big Stanford fan back in high school, during our run to the final four, etc). To give you a sense of time, my freshman class included Trent Edwards, and we never won a single Big Game during my entire 5 year period at Stanford. I've been a big Stanford sports fan in general, though I've always had a soft spot for men's basketball and camped out for several Arizona games.
I found the Cardboard early on and immediately bookmarked it because it's one of the few sports boards I've found that isn't peppered by spammy comments. I remember mentioning it to @fullmetal at one point... so I might venture to claim a referral :)Â I appreciate the intelligent analysis and humor, and I often read snippets outloud to my friends (including my fiance, a former Stanford swimmer, who - when he sees me go for my phone/laptop during commercial breaks, will ask "what does the cardboard say?").

I grew up a Stanford football fan. My dad was the alum, graduating in 1976 with a Master's in education. He and my mom (his fiancee at the time) lived in Quillen, and they have fond memories of football tailgates, biking to San Antonio Shopping Center, and surviving on the charity of the Filipino nurses at Stanford hospital. As for Stanford football, my dad treated it like another course in his Master's education, and studied it religiously.
Anyway, growing up in the Philippines, I was steeped by my dad in all things Stanford. I heard about Warner and Nevers, Plunkett and Bunce, Vataha and Garcia. I heard about how Clark Shaughnessy introduced the shotgun and how Bill Walsh perfected what would become the West Coast Offense. My dad talked incessantly about the awesomeness of the Thunderchickens. Thanks to an uncle in EL Granada, we received VHS tapes of whatever Stanford games had been televised, so we got to see Brad Muster in all his glory.
And that's how it was until we moved to the States, to Southern California. We got to see the 1991 game against USC, where Stanford finally beat the Trojans after 15 winless years. That sealed the deal for me. My dad and I would watch Stanford during their road trips to SoCal, and try to make at least one game in the Bay Area--usually Big Game. We were there for Bill Walsh's first Big Game back as head coach.
I never made it into Stanford. I attended the University of San Francisco, where we would joke that we were getting a kal education at Stanford prices. Since USF hasn't had a Division 1 football team since 1951, the students would maintain whatever allegiances they had growing up; my suitemates in freshman year all rooted for other PAC-10 teams: Oregon State, Washington, and UCLA, and we were all united in our loathing of kal and $c. They're still my best friends.
My dad and I still get together for games, though I've gone to more games by myself nowadays since I'm still in the Bay Area and he's down in SoCal, but we saw this year's UCLA and Colorado games together, and he was at the epic $c game. It's been an awesome ride these past three years for us, and we're just enjoying it.

Sorry, I mixed up my Bay Area football innovators. Shaughnessy did reinvent the T formation. Red Hickey popularized the shotgun with the 49ers.

As my handle suggests, I graduated in 1981. I married a Stanford student (celebrated our 30th last summer) and we moved around the country in grad school, returning to Palo Alto in 1988. I was temporary faculty at Stanford for a couple of years before earning a permanent job at a nearby university. Now I bicycle to womens' basketball games and the occasional football game, but spent most of the last several decades following these sports on t.v. and from a distance.
When I arrived on campus in 1977 I did not know Stanford had a football team, and was vaguely disappointed to find out they did. I was as anti-athletics as an 18 year old could be. But I had a football player and a couple team managers on my hall and it was Bill Walsh's first year. I got sucked in by the intellectual side of the game. I kept hearing stories about the genius coach who had thought up schemes that allowed us to to beat superior athletes. By the end of the season I was attending football games and attempting to predict the play calls. It was football as chess that interested me, and I never let go of it.
I did not attend a single basketball game when I was a student (pre Montgomery era--I think Kimberly Belton was our star at the time) and have still not attended a men's game--though I watched a lot of tv from the Todd Lichti era forward. Both Montgomery and Tara came after I graduated, so my interest in basketball happened indirectly. I have become one of those who loves women's college basketball and doesn't much care for men's or pro basketball. You've heard all those arguments before so I won't repeat them here.
I'm in love with the amateur ideal, and can only cheer for Stanford because I sense they do athletics the "right" way. I am employed at a university which has poor graduation rates for its athletes and which siphons desperately needed resources away from academics to support a mostly unsuccessful athletics program. Stanford is one of the few beacons of light in the college sports world.

I did not attend a single basketball game when I was a student (pre Montgomery era--I think Kimberly Belton was our star at the time) and have still not attended a men's game--though I watched a lot of tv from the Todd Lichti era forward. Both Montgomery and Tara came after I graduated, so my interest in basketball happened indirectly. I have become one of those who loves women's college basketball and doesn't much care for men's or pro basketball. You've heard all those arguments before so I won't repeat them here.

When I arrived on campus in 1977 I did not know Stanford had a football team, and was vaguely disappointed to find out they did. I was as anti-athletics as an 18 year old could be. But I had a football player and a couple team managers on my hall and it was Bill Walsh's first year. I got sucked in by the intellectual side of the game. I kept hearing stories about the genius coach who had thought up schemes that allowed us to to beat superior athletes. By the end of the season I was attending football games and attempting to predict the play calls. It was football as chess that interested me, and I never let go of it.

I don't believe I have formally introduced myself. But I believe I am the youngest Stanford board member here at 16 years old. I currently attend Vacaville High School and I am aspiring to gain admission into Stanford.
I have always had a passion for the game of football but I do not play it. I was originally a Fresno State fan (and I still am) as my father attended and also played football there. I have an older than average father but I do truly enjoy the wisdom that he gives me. I remember the 2005 Fresno State vs. USC game, I was around 10 at the time. But unfortunately that game was the pinnacle of Fresno State's program a close loss to the number 1 ranked team in the land. I am still very much enthused about the pride that the Bulldogs bring to the valley.
Anyway, I first became accustomed to Stanford when my father said he hung around the Stanford crowd and enjoyed their refined behavior. He would have liked to attend Stanford but it was too far from home and had other commitments. I further noticed Stanford, in the monumental upset of U.S.C. in '07. I attended my first Stanford game in 2009 against N.D. and have attended multiple games since then, most recently Oregon.
One of the many attributes that I find attractive about Stanford, is its "family-oriented" atmosphere and comradeship. One can create close bonds with many and friendships for a life time in (which seems) to be a close community. My catholic school, which I attended K-8, only consisted of a graduating class of twenty, but the close relationships that we had were many memories that I cherish.
Stanford is a team that I respect because of the sacrifices they have to make every single day. The intense academic curriculum and the long hours on the practice field give the true definition of a student-athlete. In a time of corruption and money, Stanford still and will always play with integrity.Â

Yes, I am definitely quite the history buff. For the term paper I just completed others chose to write about current events, such as the paying of college athletes, while I typed away about the causes of the Russian Revolution.
