If the criterion for on-campus sports activites is the resumption of in-person instruction for the general undergraduate student population, then Stanford should cancel immediately all sports for 2020-21 and the NCAA should allow student-athletes who wish to transfer immediate eligibility. Anything less is unfair to the athletes, IMO, because the likelihood of students returning en masse to campus is very low.

However, I, for one, do not agree with that criterion. I think that the University should resume any and all regular activities as it is safe to do so. It's not safe to resume a lot of in-person instruction--although some graduate student courses have in-person elements. However, research is ramping up, because it is possible--with some effort, of course--to manage safely a small cohort of laboratoy personnel. This is what is happening at the University at which I work.

From the accounts that I have read, it looks like it is now possible to manage athletics cohorts in a safe manner for the players, coaches and support staff. I don't know if the Pac-12 is considering any other fall sports for return-to-play other than football and basketball, but I hope that Stanford participates in full as long as it is reasonably safe.

No in-person graduate student instruction this fall. My daughter's boyfriend is a grad student at Stanford and he is in the new graduate student housing. All of his classes are Zoom classes. (And her Stanford job is all Zoom, email and other electronic avenues.) He isn't allowed to go to the lab.

There are estimates that the hit to students' education will cost on the order of $60 - $80K per student in terms of lifetime earnings.  That's for K-12 students, so maybe a bit less for Stanford students (or maybe more, since if it is a fixed proportion of earnings, it might affect high earners more).  Moreover without Stanford having on campus activities, there is always the possibility that the next Unicorn that would have been hatched amongst a group of friends late one night in a dorm common room won't get to see the light of day, costing the economy billions.

Yes, the short term return is much greater for football, but it is ultimately a game, and it leaves very little lasting value (with all apologies to Phogge's film vault, or is it tape).

My kids' personal experience:

Oldest (son), sophomore in high school, will do fine.  The biggest impact of the lockdown was on the social aspect, not the educational ones. And while the second semester of his freshman year was a bit of a wash, he can adjust for it.  It helps that all his teachers are younger millennials, who can manage the technology relatively well.

Middle (daughter), 8th grader, will also do fine.  She is very much an introvert and actually prefers the format.  I think she would benefit from being forced into more social situations, but that will come with time.  However, the school took an abbreviated schedule with less instruction time (because they were originally going to try to make a hybrid system), and so a lot of the learning is on her own.  Thankfully, she is the most diligent of my three kids.

Youngest (daughter), 3rd grader... it's been a disaster.  She is in a Spanish immersion program, which is challenging enough when you are trying to learn two languages in a face-to-face environment, let alone online.  Her teacher is nice, but communication has been abysmal.  As in my daughter has no idea what she is supposed to be doing in class, let alone at home.  And it's not just us, other parents have come to my wife asking her what's going on.  And she has both of us working at home and able to check in on her.

I can't imagine what it would be like for a working class, non-English speaking family where parents are essential workers.

The Palo Alto School Board voted on Tuesday to send K-5 kids back to school starting Oct. 26.  But it is a hybrid schedule whereby kids go to school 2.5 days/week, and the rest of the time they’ll be regressing to the horrific “asynchronous learning” of the spring.  That’s an enormous step backward from where my 5th grader is today - at least attendance is being taken and they are with their teachers full-time, albeit remotely. You can bet that YouTube and Roblox are going to be very popular in my home on those so-called “asynchronous learning” days. 

While there is some talk of the possibility of weekly PCR testing for teachers, there is really nothing on the level of daily antigen testing or even temperature-taking.  And there’s no proactive testing planned for students, who actually constitute the real risk to teachers.  

So, back to your point... we are making K-5 education happen, but very ineptly next to Germany, S. Korea and other countries that have their acts together.

California overall numbers for tests and hospitalizations seems pretty good. This should be safe with the daily testing. Still a clear sign of what matters, when the same measures aren't put forth to make in person learning happen. $$$$$

I was more referring to Stanford in particular. But I hope elementary openings go OK. I think some areas have low enough prevalence to make it work, but they will need to be flexible in case that changes.
