Well, let's see.  Stanford was 11-2, 12-2 and 11-3 in Mason's three years as DC from 2011-13.  They were #30, #11 and #10 in the country in points allowed per game in those three years.  Ranked in the top ten all three years.  New year's day all three years, including two Rose Bowls and a Fiesta bowl.

I don't think I'm going out on a of immense proportions limb when I say that I really hope Shaw hires Mason again...if Mason will come.

good g-2.  also, fwiw, Harbaugh hired Mason.  not sure if a vocal, independent assistant is really keeping with the Shaw hiring pattern.  likely a first if it were to occur.

Note, Harbaugh hired Mason as DB coach, but Shaw made him the co-DC (with Tarver) and Assistant HC, and made him the sole HC when Tarver left.  That doesn't exactly fit with avoiding vocal, independent assistants who might be in a position to challenge.  By the way, Mason hired Tarver to be DC and Vandy, so he may be available as well.

Tarver is the LB coach for the Cleveland Browns, who are on a roll right now. But he's from the area. Would be a hell of a coup.

Why do Stanford fans think that ex-Stanford players with no experience can walk into a coordinator's job and be successful? Not very likely.

Because many/most current Stanford fans have no memory of what a real, diverse offense looks like and can accomplish (without necessarily having a dominant OL, which is what is required for the current regime to even have a decent offense)?

The real answer is 10 years of frustration with the current guy leads some of us to believe that any change - including to former QBs who know what good offenses look like and have played in same - would be better than what we have.

That is the most direct answer.

Seriously, I am curious if Luck would be able to go from no coaching experience to Stanford OC. I mean you would think a QB of Luck's level could do it, but I don't know if I've ever heard of that before.

Shaw could have/should have tried Husak first in that role.
