Was in Vegas, watching from a casino. Depressed as hell afterward (and a bit pissed), especially knowing that a weak Syracuse team was on deck ('Bama handled them easily that year). Fortunately, lots of "free" drinks at the tables helped ease the pain . . .

Thread drift, to which I contributed, has sadly distracted from the observation that we had a resounding win over a team that, somewhere in this thread, was thought to be an NCAA tournament contender. One game may be too early to render a veredict, and I expect some maddening inconsistency, but we looked like a tournament team today. The future sure looks bright for the MBB team this year.

Really strong debut for a team with length and strong D. I was particularly impressed by the increased speed with which this team moves the ball.
Williams looks like a veteran player, not a true frosh in his first game. I think the lack of a crowd contributed to that, but that's probably going to be status quo all season.

I don't think crowds would affect Zaire. His HS team (Sierra Canyon) played a full national schedule including contests in NBA arenas with 17,000 fans. Actually an international schedule since they played in front of packed houses in China also. Games turned into circus atmospheres when LeBron or Dwyane Wade were in attendance to watch their sons play. And most of their games were on the road against hostile crowds eager to watch their local heroes take down the big name visitors from California.

Williams reminds me of Childress. Long, smooth and even the personality based on the post game interview (confident but a little goofy) seems similar.

I went from this is the best Stanford MBB player I've seen that doesn't have a twin, to he's the flat out best I've ever seen. His game reminds me of Jayson Tatum's. He already has a better looking shot. If he can put muscle on, I could see him being as good as Jimmy Butler. We might have a future NBA All-Star on this team.
It's too bad Terry opted out because if he had stayed this could have been a Final Four team.
Guess we are a basketball school again.

While I loved yesterday's performance and had high hopes for our defense this year, I'm still amazed by how well our defense played in the first game of the season -- especially after this crazy pre-season practice period. Alabama has a lot of offensive talent too. Given what I saw yesterday, I'm going to say that this is the best Stanford hoops defense that we have ever put on the floor. As a result, we should be in every game we play this year. Hopefully we will be able to max out our schedule with this group and have an offense that complements the defense.

LOL. I was at that game. It was pathetic, even though it was close. 18-16 was the final and we actually led 14-12. Credit to OSU for their composure.

Pete Newell held the ball on USF in Russ’s senior year. Something like 11 minutes. The Dons blew them away anyway. I saw most of USF’s home games that season in Kezar. Nobody in the history of basketball played better team defense.
