We hit the 50 rebound mark again, and kept the opponent to 61 points or under. I expect Tara, in between the coaching moments, is pointing out to the team that defense is a team sport and that each & every one of them is responsible for that.
We pulled down 12 of the 30 rebounds under our basket. 40% is a very impressive number. We got 39 of 53 under their basket, a respectable number at 74% but not dominating.
4 players with 8+ rebounds; 5 with 9+ points; only 2 players with 3 fouls; Only 1 player with more than 27 minutes. Even the turnovers were spread out. I take it as a good sign that Kiana only took 6 shots in 32 minutes. Cameron's 5 blocks is notable, but the rest of our teams out-blocked Arizona (4-3).
I do feel we kept our best players in longer than we might have, but only Kiana was in for more then 2/3 of the game, but Alyssa, Jana, and Agnes got only 5 minutes or less. But, we were playing a good team and it is good for starters to have more time against good opponents.
From Arizona's point of view, did they have excuses? Did we not see their best for some reason? Players not there? No practice time?
Tough to have a strategy against Stanford. Few teams can match up in a high scoring match; few teams can match up in a slow, defensive match. A team with two bigs might disrupt our rebounding. Pair that with, say, three 3-point shooters, and Stanford could have trouble in a high scoring match. I think a good, big post could get Brink into foul trouble.
I'm impressed that McDonald had a bad night shooting. Whether the issue was that her defenders kept up with her enough that she had fewer good looks, or whether she felt she had to do more of the offense as no one else was open much, it probably was Stanford defense, not a lid on the basket.
Have we heard more about the 4 coaches & assistants that were not there? I didn't see Kate or the trainer, but I didn't study the sideline shots. As this is the first game after Christmas, maybe some are quarantining after visiting family, or SCC or California, without having known exposure.
