Stats bear that out. Innings 1-3, hitters hit .160 against him. Innings 4-6, hitters hit .278 with .845 OPS. more to the point, he was unhittable the first plate appearance, pretty good the second plate appearance, third plate appearance he got smacked around.

Third time around is the big thing now. Smoltz put it quite well - when he was a starter he didn’t come out of the shoot throwing everything he had. Today pitchers do. So hitters have seen everything once through the order. At most twice. Smoltz is too kind to say what he really meant - in his era, they pitched. Today most just throw.
Again, math. And baseball becoming nothing but a power game.
