Most of the guys on the initial ballot made the Hall. But you are correct IMO. They should have elected 10 the first time. Young, Speaker, Chadwick, Spaulding, Collins IMO.

Cy Young's challenge was that his career straddled the 19th and 20th centuries. The initial Hall entrant ballot asked BBWAA members to name separate lists, in order -- five from the 19th century and 10 from the 20th century. Young finished 4th on the 19th century ballot and 8th on the 20th century ballot.
Here are two trivia questions for you...in the initial HoF balloting, 40 players were suggested for the baseball Hall of Fame. 47 players actually received votes.
1. Which future hall of famers were not on the original ballot?
Frank Chance, John McGraw, Frank "Home Run" Baker, Fred Clarke, Sam Crawford, and Connie Mack. McGraw and Mack were great managers, but of the remainder, only Crawford was an extraordinary player. 19 year career and led the league in 14 categories (6 times in triples with more than 10 triples in 17 consecutive seasons) over the years, including as the career leader in triples. Should have been on the original ballot.
2. Which players were on the ballot, but did not ultimately get into the Hall of Fame?
Johnny Kling, Lou Criger, and Bill Bradley. Bradley was a Brooks Robinson-like third baseman with a Mrs. Robinson batting average, and Kling and Criger were Campanella-style defensive catchers with Eli Whiteside-style bats. Kling was the original trash-talking catcher, BTW.

Long hits are classified as doubles and triples.

I would guess Ty Cobb has the career record for long hits, since he's in the top 5 in both doubles and triples. Otherwise, I'd guess it is Tris Speaker (career leader in doubles) and in the top-10 in triples.

Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle gave Pete Rose the "Charlie Hustle" sobriquet in spring training his rookie year. The legend is that Ford walked him and Rose ran to first, but Ford didn't actually use the Charlie Hustle term until Mantle hit a long home run in spring training, but Rose (playing outfield) sprinted to the wall after a ball that was long gone. Mantle couldn't stand Rose or his style of play and said "If I had played my career hitting singles like Pete (Rose), I'd wear a dress."
And it's true. Rose wasn't very fast, though he hustled. He stole 198 bases but was thrown out 149 times, a terrible percentage. Cobb and Rose had close to the same number of doubles, but Cobb had nearly 3x the triples that Rose did.
