Chub Feeney wanted Billy Pierce. He stole him from the White Sox for some nobodies. Horace insisted on Don Larsen being thrown in. Larsen won the deciding playoff game with the Dodgers and Pierce saved it.

Interesting enough several of the hottest games I ever attended were opening day 1980 or so at Candlestick with a company group in CF and then Pac Bell over the left forks foul line. All facing the sun
Of course most of the other 700 or so of my games at Candlestick were cold to very cold

Mrs. Mick and I were dating in 1984 and we went to a Candlestick night game in very light clothing. My future father in law thought we were nuts and insisted that we bring a blanket. It never got below 80 degrees, nor was there any breeze or wind on an unseasonably warm evening.
Of course, there's always a tradeoff. The Giants were down 8-0 by the third inning on their way to a crushing loss.

Wild guess on Giants' question... Cap Anson. I know only that he once managed the Giants and that he played the most seasons of anyone in history. And that he set the anti-black standard and that his tombstone read, "Here lies a man who batted .300."

Triples were much more common back in the old days, when there were lots of big, oddly shaped fields. So it's probably an old-time pitcher with a long career -- Cy Young? Christy Mathewson? Walter Johnson?

As for BC's question the pitcher who did it must have been an exceptional athlete. Just wowed by his stats. I would have put him into my guesses but somebody named him first.

Yeah, Terry got it, old-time pitcher with a long career playing in a big, oddly shaped field. Walter Johnson pitched in the Senators' cavernous Griffith Stadium for much of his career. He hit .235 for his career and had 2,529 plate appearances. He hit 41 triples for his career, including 6 in 1913. Overall, he averaged 7 triples per 162 games, which today would generally be good enough to make it into the top-10 for a position player. Don't think we will see that again.
