In seeking to DVR tonight's game v. Vanderbilt, I see that ESPNU is not included as part of my Comcast subscription.  I have ESPN-Plus after signing up to watch Stanford-SMU soccer a few weeks ago.  But from what I can tell, ESPN-Plus does not allow me access to ESPNU.  Or maybe it does via the ESPN app.  Does anyone know what it takes to get ESPNU?  I guess I'll find out soon enough whether I can get the game without having to pay yet more for access which, if confronted with, my id ("just pay the damn money") and superego ("not another cent to ESPN") will have to battle it out.

My understanding is that ESPNU and ESPN+ are two different things requiring separate subscriptions. To get ESPNU on cable, you have to get an "enhanced" sports package from Comcast or your cable provider. ESPN+ is an ESPN subscription that lets you stream some content that is not being carried on any of the ESPN cable channels.
That said, I see the Vandy game as listed among the offerings in the ESPN/Watch/Upcoming streaming menu. However, the listing by itself may not mean that an ESPN+ subscription is sufficient to let you stream ESPNU content. For example, I was unable to stream the Texas WVB game (Longhorn Network) from a couple of weeks ago, even though it was listed in the same menu and I have an ESPN+ (but not LHN) subscription. But it is worth a try, in case ESPN+ includes ESPNU, as they are in the same company family.
PS: The Boston College-Temple football game is an ESPNU offering right now on the ESPN streaming menu. Try streaming that one; that should give you your answer.

It has been the most frustrating thing about ESPN for me since I became interested in sports because a lot of big out of conference games are on the channel and I don't pay for the sports package. 

You can try signing up for a free 7 day subscription though Sling or another service that carries the channel and cancel before the week is up. I did that two weeks ago when Stanford volleyball played Texas on the Longhorn Network.

For cord cutters, I am a big fan of FuBo with their sports package. Not cheap, but fairly comprehensive and has all the Pac-12 channel offerings.

for the UCLA game next week, i'm going to enlarge my package and add the PAC-12 Network.

Thanks all for the suggestions and discussion.  I'll fiddle around and see if I might finesse this so that I don't have to pay any more money to have the opportunity to be showered with an hour or so of commercials.
