The University of Akron made it official Saturday morning, selecting former Oregon offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead as the Zips new head football coach.

UA Director of  Collegiate Athletics Charles Guthrie made the announcement and the hire is pending approval by the board of trustees. A news conference to introduce Moorhead as the choice to replace Tom Arth, who was fired during the season, is scheduled for next week.

Moorhead, 48, has steadily ascended the college football coaching ranks, but he has ties to UA. A native of Pittsburgh, Moorhead served as quarterbacks coach (2004-06) and offensive coordinator for the Zips from 2006-08 under J.D. Brookhart.

Moorhead did a good job as OC at Penn State and Oregon and an underrated job as HC at Mississippi State, I was surprised that he didnt get more consideration at Washington. If Cristolbal were to leave for Miami one would think that Oregon would have considered elevating him as well.

Oregon still doesn't understand they are just helping Cristobal's contract negotation with Miami.
Alternatively, those administrators in the know at Oregon may have told him that the school has already determined its finalists to replace Cristobal.

Luckily for Oregon most of their recruits have verballed already and it is likely, at least to me, that the recruits believe Nike University will win with anyone coaching or will be the best place in the West to get NIL money.

December 15th is quickly approaching, so I suspect next week is going to be crazy as schools try to find anyone at any price to keep recruits happy on LOI day.

With the seniors and transfers gone, a lot of schools just need some bodies to help with spring activities.   And signing them up before the holidays eliminated the worries that over the school break some coach or extended family member could make a verbal open their recruiting back up.

So the pre-Holiday verbal had some benefits, but now schools want their new coach up and running before that signing period.   And that realistically means they need to be on the job before the end of November.  

It all makes sense if you accept the inner workings, but I think to a casual fan the whole situation is crazy and seems wrong. 

One day a coach might be jumping up and down screaming that the athletes should not transfer just because they are not starting.  They might scream to the media that athletes should risk injury to play for their 6-6 team in the run down stadium bowl in front of 12,000 spectators rather than get ready for the NFL combine.   The next day that coach might leave his team in the middle of the season so they can fly to another town, recruit high school kids, and collect a slightly bigger paycheck for his "fAAMly".

Though I did enjoy watching ESPN go crazy of Kelly's newly discovered Southern accent.
