WBB: Stanford 66 Gonzaga 50
01-09-2022, 04:22 PM
We lead 17-12 after one quarter.
We are cold shooting, just 27%, but we also remarkably if the stats are correct, have more than triple the shot attempts than Gonzaga (24 to 7), thanks to 10 offensive rebounds and seven Bulldogs turnovers (to our 0).
Haley Jones scored the last seven points for us and Tara is using her bench liberally, with appearances by 11 players already just in the first quarter.

As much as the mispronunciations are driving me almost as crazy as the missed bunnies, he's otherwise a pretty enjoyable announcer.

I'll bet he a good announcer when he has time to prepare or is already familiar with the players. This game and live stream was thrown together pretty quickly!

In the second to last Stanford possession, Brink showed the impact she can have when she's on the floor, grabbing two offensive rebounds and keeping the possession alive, eventually resulting in a Jump three pointer. She has so much talent, she just needs to avoid foul trouble.
I held my breath the following Zags possession when she was playing aggressive defense which results in a Gonzaga player temporarily losing control of the ball and then the shot clock violation, and glad that Brink did not get called for her second foul.

Half way through the second Q, Brink has 6 points, 6 rebs, and 1 foul. I'd like her to use this game to get back on track. So far, a good start.
Haley is really making her presence known.

But it was a last few days assignment.
As for the game, defense seems good. Kinda wild though.

Oh man, I wouldn't judge anybody on water polo announcing. Most of the action happens underwater! The best ones are those who have played the sport.

Bench is 1/10 on field goals in first half. Too liberal of substitutions for my liking. We could be up 20 but don't score the last 4 minutes of the 2nd quarter and they go on a 7-0 run.

We lead 33-24 at halftime, we had a couple spurts where we went on a mini run, but we ended the half cold, missing our last five shots as Gonzaga went on a 7-0 run to close the quarter, cutting the lead to single digits.
With Jordan Hamilton making an appearance, twelve players have played in the game for us.
With the last basket by Gonzaga, the Bulldogs are actually shooting slightly better than us, percentage wise, 32% to 31.7%, but the difference in the ball game is due to our 16 more shot attempts.
No one is in double digits yet, Brink is the most efficient so far at 3/4. We need her to get more involved on the offense, as it seems like there is no one that could guard her in the paint.

Our defense is playing well, holding Gonzaga to 24 in the first half. They have 32% shooting and 10 turnovers. Our offense has been erratic. Brink Jones and Jump are each doing their part. Would be nice to see Lexie come alive against Gonzaga in the 2nd half--hope she did not burn up all her basketball karma against Oregon. Was nice to see Jones make a three.

O-board, choose to kick (to Jump, wide open), o-board, choose to finish (does), loose ball, dive on floor, guard on the perimeter, block the shot, run the court, get ball on block, choose to pass to Haley for a layup (miss)...crazy impact in all aspects. Her decision making and passing ability are crazy good. But then I see her run the court, catch a bounce pass in stride, and finish at full speed through 2 defenders and I'm even more amazed. Sky's the limit for Cam!

Perhaps Tara is using this non-conference game to get her bench players more experience. I don't mind it so long as we maintain a comfortable lead. However, if we have one of those 3rd Q let downs, it should be starters only. We need to learn how to snap out of that funk more quickly.

This game could offer really valuable time to the bench against a good team. But our bench has to do better than 1-10 from the field.
Also, Gonzaga got 6 points in last-second shot attempts at the end of both the 1st and 2nd quarters. Oregon also hit a buzzer beater at the end of one of the quarters. Those hurt.

That was amazing to see her have the body control not to be called for a foul and finish with the layup
