Tragic. It sounds like Stanford immediately instituted some actions to help others cope with this. That's good.
While it affects members of the Cardboard more because she was a member of a team many follow, it is equally tragic whether this individual is a member of a athletic team or not, or indeed, a Stanford student or not.

If you look at her profile, you will see an illustration of the truth that the depth of the illnses, not the actual problems the victim is suffering, is the primary driver of suicide. On paper, this victim had everything going for her.

Very sad indeed. Has it been announced that she took her own life? It seems like everyone is acting as if that is the case even though so little has been reported.
We had several suicides when I was at Stanford, including someone in my dorm my sophomore year. Devastatingly sad to think how often people suffer in silence rather than reach out, but depression can also make the effort necessary to walk across the room seem unimaginably difficult. One more reason to go through the world treating other people kindly - we never know what inner torment others are bearing.

I haven't seen any announcement about cause of death (and doubt we'll ever see anything officially). Unfortunately, in this young healthy population, the most likely causes of death are by suicide and drug OD.

Sorry for the misinformation. I stopped subscribing to Rivals before all that went down. I only knew of Ben because he used to post his Cal content on Stanford's board. Always very friendly. Good life lesson to be kind, even to a rival, because it's nice to have bridges. I am not sure why I assumed that Ben was pulling double duty.

So tragic. A senior who was clearly a big part of the social community among the student athletes. She often posted photos of herself supporting other Stanford teams. We sit near the student section and I saw her at the Stanford women's basketball games this week, socializing and interacting with the band. She was always a big presence and was hard to miss. It is a reminder that we never know what issues or pain a person is facing even when they seem to have it all together. My heart goes out to her family and those who knew her well.

Same here. I was at Avaya and saw her stop 2 NCar penalty kicks to give us the title. I liked her bravado and confidence as a freshman and was looking forward to her accomplishing great things in the future. Very sad situation.

OMG. I have been paying attention to the WBB Tournament and have not kept up here. I just saw the article on CNN. I can't add anything to the wonderful tributes here, but seeing it was Katie Meyer. That hit me REALLY hard. I am not a brobdingnagian soccer fan, but I will never forget her performance in the PK shootout against UNC.

Back in 2012 Samantha Wopat, a member of Stanford WVB, committed suicide in her dorm room. Stanford authorities and newspaper stories described it as a "medical emergency". I never saw the word suicide in any official article about her tragic passing. I heard from players' parents what had happened.

Everyone speculated, and then years later, there is a documentary of what happened.
