Remember when "Covid" just became a taboo topic, even though it had been discussed nonstop for the better part of a year and the pandemic was still rolling with lots of ups and downs ahead? But something happened, and the topic became "too political" or "it seemed like a good time to close the board."

I respect that the board's focus is Stanford sports and support the general principal of minimizing politics, so whatever the mods think, I'm fine with.
MHO, I'd favor keeping threads open more than closed though and if there are issues, temporarily blocking offenders rather than closing threads.

Not sure I come to the Cardboard for a Ukraine discussion. A discussion about Covid and the pandemic response makes more sense because it did affect the Stanford sports teams we all follow.
The board is boring right now because there are multiple threads about the WBB team and not much else. Meanwhile the AD is an ongoing dumpster fire but you wouldn't know if from the discussions on this board. For better or for worse the football team is entering its most consequential season since Shaw took over. The other Stanford sports, unfortunately, are still highly dependent on a successful football program for their operating revenues so there should be considerable interest here in getting things turned around.

I’m sorry you feel that way. I locked the thread, temporarily, because the discussion was getting away from Ukraine, with one poster using it as an opportunity to push their viewpoints on global warming, the effect of natural resource exploitation on democracy. These are viewpoints I am sympathetic to, but they are tangential to the discussion about Ukraine. Concerningly, to me at least, is that the post engendered replies rebutting the assertions, and while the replies were well-reasoned, we were getting into a debate about whether fossil fuel extraction leads to autocratic government and what the political orientation of that government is. I don’t blame those people for replying; it is hard to sit back and see someone make off-topic assertions you disagree with and not want to rebut them.
This forum is not an unrestrained free-for-all. If you want a place where you can post almost anything you want about any topic, there are other places for that. Otherwise, we ask that you exhibit self-restraint and don’t blow it for everyone. I personally found the Ukraine thread to be a valuable source of info and a place I could share interesting, but seeing as it was not a core thread to Stanford sports, and was at a risk for becoming political, it was always going to have a short leash. I warned the poster before not to veer off topic, but they didn’t listen. This is, as they say, why we can’t have nice things.
My plan was to unlock the thread after a day (subject to Yvonne’s approval) when people have had a chance to reflect and hopefully resolve to keep it on topic. If you need a fix of discussion about Ukraine to tide you over, I suggest r/Ukraineconflict on Reddit, or follow one of the many tweets that I embedded into that thread.
