As if that offer wasn't generous enough, Pat gave John a 100% risk-free insurance policy. If after five years John wanted out, he could sell his stake back to Bowlen for his purchase price plus $5 million. So not only risk free, literally get paid $5 million if he changed his mind.

madoff aside, if he had read markets very skillfully, he could have put his 21 million in the nasdaq qqq in 1998 at 50 and sold it in 2000 at 120. he'd then have about 50 million.
if he'd reinvested in late 2002 at 21 and sold in 2007 at 55, he'd have about 125 million
if he'd reinvested in late 2007 at 26 and sold in december 2021 at 400, he'd have 2 billion.

so before we consider him a fool, how many of us got all those calls right and now have 100 x what we had in 1998? not i.

I think highly enough of Elway to own 2 (replica) jerseys. But the discussion here isn’t apples to apples. What was at stake was a guaranteed 13.8% total return floor on a 5yr investment with potential for further upside based on how the organization plus the professional enterprise (NFL) performed, not whether one can time a volatile (stock) market correctly to buy at the lows and sell at the highs, which is pretty much impossible  (I’ve had my share of shoulda/woulda/couldas). Ok, add the credit risk that Bowlen wasn’t good for his word. While Elway may have had insight we don’t into the organization and thus had his doubts, those are pretty attractive risk/reward profiles most times, for me. My two cents’ worth, if that.
