Shanahan has to put a lot more emphasis on protecting them, obviously, because he clearly is not doing a good job in that department. It's not some crazy anomaly that they are getting hurt so frequently and severely. The way they are being taught and employed is leading to a higher frequency of significant injury than any other team.
So, to back up that statement please let us know what every NFL team is doing to protect its quarterback. Please give us specifics. Blocking schemes. Conditioning. QB coaching methods and techniques . Discussions between coaches and QB. Trainers methods. Strength and condition. Etc.
I look forward to this. Because when you make a blanket statement like that, I’m sure that you have the facts to back it up. Can’t wait. This is going to be illuminating.
While I wait for your factual support, I’ll lay out the injuries:
Garrapolo:
2018 -Torn ACL. Week 3. Scrambled. Near sideline, tried to get a couple extra yards. Got hit awkwardly.
2020 -Week 2 High ankle sprain. Was in pocket. Defender landed on his plant leg. Game was played at Jets. New artificial turf. Niners had a bunch of leg injuries that day.
Week 8- reinjured ankle. I’ll see if I can find details.
2021 - Calf. Week 4 Not actually sure how it happened. Thinks he got stepped on.
Week 16 Thumb fracture. Sacked. Landed on thimb.
Shoulder sprain in playoffs.
2022. 12-4-22. Broken foot. Scrambled, defender landed with full weight on his foot.
Lance 2022. I didn’t see this. But my understanding is he was running up the middle got hit and broke his foot. Designed run.
Purdy - hit on arm as he’s throwing.
My first question – where is the commonality on these injuries? JG got hurt in several different ways.
Lance - You can argue that you should not have a quarterback running up the middle. But I’ll respond with the fact that all running quarterbacks do that. Jackson, Hurts , Allen , Fields. One of the key elements of Lance’s game is running the football. That’s a risk of a running quarterback. As evidenced by the fact that every single one of those quarterbacks, except Allen got hurt this year.
Purdy was simply a fluke. Got hit in an area where quarterbacks usually don’t. When his arm was in a vulnerable position. In fact, I would not be surprised if there’s a rule that’s put in place next year to make that kind of hit illegal.
49ers throw the ball less than most teams. (Which in and of itself lowers injury opportunity for QB). I was, am, critical of the blocking scheme on the Purdy injury. (Shanahan explained that it was play action pass which is designed for TE to make the block. He whiffed.I’ve also seen some other analysts indicate that Purdy should’ve stepped up and didn’t.) But that is a far cry from saying there’s something systemic that leads to more QB injuries. The fact of the matter is, they’ve primarily had one quarterback – Garoppolo – who, for one reason or another is injury prone.
Also, Shanahan ran this system in Atlanta as offensive coordinator. I don’t remember Ryan getting hurt.
So, again - specific facts. Because that’s a rather serious accusation.
