The youngest player in the 3X National at 18, Kiki Iriafen, made her mark in a losing cause. Kiki scored seven points and played tough against the Rain City Force 10 team. She also fought it out defensively against a big and talented, undefeated opponent. In one sideline scramble for the ball, Kiki bounced the ball against her opponent and out of bounds.
It would take more to beat the RCF10, though, and Stanford fell behind 10-1 in the early going. Hand it to Stanford, they didn’t quit and came back on a 7-2 run playing their opponent even over the last few minutes of play. When time ran out, the score was 12-8 and Stanford hadfallen to a much more experienced and bigger team.
In my view, the team had lost the focus that they had in the ten-minute game they had played one hour earlier. Belibi, especially, over-played and tried in vain to put the team on her back. Demetre couldn’t find her stroke and Harriel had a hard time shooting over the outstretched hands of the opponents.
It was clear that this sophomore-to-be subset of the 2022-23 Stanford team gained valuable experience. Kiki brought new assertiveness to her game, Jzaniya's studies of the other teams reflected well in her execution of her game. Brooke showed a willingness to mix it up with the opposition and to be more assertive. And Fran's leadership has emerged as she learns the value of playing within herself while involving her teammates in the game.
The experience of playing against other accomplished athletes will prepare this group to be stronger individuals and bring higher skill sets to next year’s team experience.
