As it relates to Serena, did anyone who saw both her matches so far think she actually played better in the second round defeating the #2 seed than she did the first playing an unranked player?
I didn't think she quite had the power on her shots needed to beat the top players in the first round match, but she sure did in the second. But the thing that should make the field nervous is that she moved really well in both matches, showing no signs of any lower body injury or compromise. My guess is her fitness probably isn't a problem for her and if she can get in a groove from just playing more, she has a puncher's chance to continue advancing.
I'll never forget an Aussie Open several years ago when Serena came back to play after injury and looked out of shape at the start. Then she somehow ended up winning the tournament. I'm getting those kind of vibes now, but I have to believe the field is tougher than at that Aussie Open and just can't fathom a 40 year old winning the U.S. Open. It would be a capstone achievement for one of the sport's icons.
