Not really sure what you're saying here. But some important things A) even "cleaning up" images is bad, important to understand. Not behavior to emulate.

You need this software that detects probable manipulations. Back in the day when these papers were written, that software wasn't written yet. Even if it did exist it isn't the standard of practice to run it on every image file in your lab.
