I am surprised that they are getting this far this quickly. I actually feared it would require a total meltdown to get anybody's attention. The question now is whether they can actually pass whatever they come up with.(07-20-2023, 04:07 PM)PalmTree Wrote: Let the record show I only brought up Tuberville because of his SEC/Big 12 affiliation, thinking that having him and Cory Booker on the same subcommittee duking it out over all-things-NIL would be a popcorn-worthy event - nothing more, nothing less.
There are at least two initiatives in the Senate right now. One is led by Tommy Tuberville and Joe Manchin:
New draft NIL legislation grants NCAA great authority - Sports Illustrated
The other involves Cory Booker: 3 U.S. Senators release bipartisan draft of federal NIL legislation for college sports (yahoo.com)
Geaux Cardinal!

In other words, it remains to be seen if either of these efforts are genuine. It is encouraging that each of them is associated with someone who knows something about college sports. On the other hand, there have been more than half a dozen hearings on the matter and nothing has yet come out of committee. That suggests that there is no urgency, and this could stagnate until there is some massive public relations disaster associated with NIL.(07-20-2023, 07:07 PM)BigEasyCard Wrote:It is great that at least some of the Congress has finally realized that without statutory authority governance of college athletics is impossible. Quote:Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville and West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at addressing name, image and likeness [NIL] issues in college sports on Tuesday. The bill, titled the "Protecting Athletes, Schools, and Sports (PASS) Act of 2023," was characterized in a press release as the "culmination of a year-long initiative" in which Tuberville and Manchin collaborated with various parties to draft guidelines surrounding NIL compensation for NCAA athletes.
