I hope Lepolo's stat line will confirm what Tara recently said--that Lepolo was gaining confidence and her offense was necessary to prevent opposing defenses from clogging the paint. A career high 20 point, 6/10 from three point range, 6 assists to 1 turnover, only 1 foul while she was on Cal's 42% three point shooters and helped hold McIntosh to 0/4.
Absolutely superb, and it is happening at the right moment, to give our team a new dimension and some confidence going into Pac 12 play.
Cal has some major talent and they nearly beat us on this floor a year ago, leading by 3 with just a couple of minutes left. This was not an easy team to play and our defense demolished them. Further, the blanket-Jump-and-clog-the-paint strategy that beat us so often last year gradually wore down and broke apart today. Invigorating to see that happen.
Iriafen continues to sustain her excellence with a double double. One bit of concern--her mid range jumper, which worked so well earlier in the year, has not looked as good recently.
Brink's fouls continue to be a concern, and now we will worry about her right thumb. But her talent oozes and we can only hope that she can stay in critical games.
I'm beginning to think having Agara on the floor is more productive than having Bosgana on the floor--on average.
Harriel look good coming back. Ogden looked rusty. Did the announcers say Ogden had a foot issue? Or was that Harriel?
This year Cal has been an excellent three point shooting team. Today they were 12.9%. On the other hand, we have been weak on perimeter defense, as Gonzaga taught us. This is encouraging that we did not allow the Cal shooters to go off on us the way the Gonzaga shooters did. Could it be that all our hard work and practice focusing on defense since the Gonzaga loss is beginning to bear fruit?
A lot to like with this win. Still some obvious areas for improvement, but this game at Cal leaves me with a much better feeling that last year's game at Cal.
