Mark Madsen. If Stanford offered him the job, why wouldn't he take it even if there is a contract buyout. I say let's go find the best candidate out there regardless of Stanford connection who can resurrect our program. ACC basketball is competitive. We need a major step up from Haase.

I would love to see Mark get the job, but the prospects of us paying for a buyout is pretty dismal. I think the current administration is looking for cheap first, talent second.

It will be so shortsighted if Muir doesn't let Haase go and go HARD for the best possible replacement, including at least one member of his staff who who has strong East Coast recruiting ties. MBB is the one sport where I think a strong case can be made that our move from the Pac-12 to the ACC was a net improvement (WBB would be close because minus ascent UCLA and USC and with Ore/OreSU/Zona on the decline, the new Pac-10 would have been a fairly weak conference.). The ACC is a hugely better basketball conference than the moribund Pac-12 has been, and charter travel for basketball games has already been the norm for top programs for years, so the travel costs for MBB are much more minimal. (Honestly, flying commercial to Pullman is way worse than a charter to the research triangle.)

As someone who has followed ACC basketball since 1981 (Goza! Goza!), I know that it is hard work just to be an also-ran in that conference. I am as close to actively rooting against Stanford as should be allowed, because the last thing Stanford needs is a miracle tournament berth to justify keeping Haase another minute. The ACC isn't what it once was when a Len Bias led Maryland would finish 5th out of 8 teams, but it is still so far above Haase's head that he simply can't be around in the new era.
Maybe Madsen should turn Cal around before being offered the Stanford job? I get that they have already won more games this year than all of last season, but that is a low bar. Something tells me Madsen will be happier at Cal anyway. I'd convince Tony Bennett his heart is near San Francisco, like half an hour without traffic on 280 and pedal to the metal. Give him successful startup just sold out to Google money. He knows the conference....

If you want to WIN BIG in the 2 BIG Revenue Sports, = Football & MensBasketball ....one needs to GO hire a Charismatic, BigTime Head Coach (Who will Attract Recruits with his Charisma & Energize the FanBase !)
And if someone says, Stanford doesn't 'want to play in those fields of the $60+Million Dollar Contracts for Head Coaches of these 2 sports, all we need to do is look & see what having that 'laissez-faire' - Go 'small engine that could' attitude for Football & MensBasketball' .... almost did to Stanford Sports as a whole, which was to have Stanford Sports almost 'not invited into a big Power Conference', ...because despite having won the most NCAA championships overall (e.g. Stanford), ...PowerConferences & TelevisionNetworks & BigTime recruits in those 2 Big Revenue sports, ....only Respect You, Extend lucrative invitations to you, & Want to come play for you, ... if you are Top20 in Football & Top20 in Mens Basketball !

Inducements could be money, low expectations, quality of life, and getting to opt out (relatively speaking) from the hamster wheel of year to year roster rebuilding. There could be a person it appeals to. It’s not a crazy idea….if we are willing to spend and to be audacious. Which we won’t be.

Yeah, I don't get the little engine that could mindset, even if it works sometimes (Montgomery, Harbaugh). Stanford has more money to throw at problems than they will admit to having - I saw where the school is 'helping' the AD deal with the move to the ACC and what they gave away in rights just to join the conference. They were paying Shaw obscene amounts of money like this is College Station, so they can throw serious coin at someone to "suffer" living on the mid-Peninsula and playing in a bit of a band box. But that band box can rock under the right circumstances. Maples was electric in the Knight-Lee years.
I agree with StanUSwagger, even if I wouldn't hire some of the specific names on that list with a gun to my head. I like a splash hire, but not just because they are famous. Chris Mullin abjectly sucked at St. Johns (0.447 in four years although his brother died while he was coaching there). We need a coach who hasn't abjectly sucked over several years. The rest of those names would need to be vetted by someone other than Muir. McHale wasn't that great with the Rockets. Isaiah Thomas never made it past the first round of NBA playoffs with Indiana (3 years) and never made the playoffs with the Knicks (2 years). Not great with FIU (0.286, which is a sub-Haase record). Kevin Garnett says he is 'enjoying retirement and does not plan to become a coach anytime soon.' Vince Carter has never coached. I don't mean to rip into your list, but wanted to provide some examples of how it isn't as automatic as we think.

I don't mean to rip into your list, but wanted to provide some examples of how it isn't as automatic as we think.
Jarron Collins always comes up during these discussions, but it seems like he is a career assistant (now at New Orleans) and he's already 45. If he hadn't played for Stanford during its glory days, he would be on no one's radar for HC at Stanford.

Remember, Stanford is part of East Coast hoops now. He just has to have an apartment out here. Tough to see someone as accomplished as Wright diving back into a reclamation job, but I don't know what motivates him. He had a sweet gig at Nova and hung it up.
I agree with StanUSwagger, even if I wouldn't hire some of the specific names on that list with a gun to my head. I like a splash hire, but not just because they are famous. Chris Mullin abjectly sucked at St. Johns (0.447 in four years although his brother died while he was coaching there). We need a coach who hasn't abjectly sucked over several years. The rest of those names would need to be vetted by someone other than Muir. McHale wasn't that great with the Rockets. Isaiah Thomas never made it past the first round of NBA playoffs with Indiana (3 years) and never made the playoffs with the Knicks (2 years). Not great with FIU (0.286, which is a sub-Haase record). Kevin Garnett says he is 'enjoying retirement and does not plan to become a coach anytime soon.' Vince Carter has never coached. Given his longstanding PNW ties, Lloyd wouldn't be West Coast averse (which is my concern with the pie-in-the-sky prospect of hiring Jay Wright, who has long been my favorite college coach of the modern era, and whom I think would fit really well on the Farm. Bennett, my second favorite, at least coached for six years at WSU.)
But man, that going from Zona to Stanford would definitely be a apples-to-oranges switch for Lloyd, because U of A has an entirely different recruiting profile, fan base, and (post Big 12 move) conference dynamic. That said, given that U of A is in dire financial straights, I seriously doubt they could match us if we put serious $ behind an offer.
