Don't see many women's gymnastics posts on here, but Stanford women's gymnastics qualified for the national championship meet! 

To summarize how big a deal this is: For the NCAA gymnastics postseason, 32 teams (technically 36 teams make it, but there is a play in round to get to 32) are in. 16 teams get seeded and distributed into four regions, with some wiggle room due to teams hosting regionals. The other 16 teams get distributed geographically. Stanford was unseeded and was placed in the Berkeley regional. There are two rounds in the regionals with Stanford going against 3 seed Cal, 14 seed Auburn, and unseeded Southern Utah (play-in winner) in one regional semifinal and 6-seed Denver, 11-seed UCLA, ASU and UW in the other regional semifinal. Top 2 from each semis face off in the regional final.

In the first regional semi on Friday, 6 seed Denver and ASU advanced scoring 197.275 and 197.15, respectively (upsetting 11 seed UCLA). In our semi, Cal put up a 197.8 and we scored 197.6 to upset Auburn (196.8). This set up the regional final of Cal, Denver, ASU, and Stanford. Stanford advanced to the regional final two years ago as an unseeded team, but had not made a national championship meet since 2016 when 12 teams made it (compared to 8 now). 

In the regional finals today, Stanford finished the first rotation on vault and was in 4th/last place. They were tied for second with Denver after two rotations (bars) with Cal in the lead. They were 0.1 behind Denver for second place after the third rotation (beam), with Denver headed to vault and Stanford on the floor. Vault finishes a lot quicker than floor so prior to our last competitor Chloe Widner of Treecast fame, among other things, going, we knew that she needed a 9.875 for Stanford to advance. Well she got a perfect 10 and Stanford completed the upset and advances to nationals!

No unseeded team has ever advanced to nationals since they trimmed the national championship meet to 8 teams in 2019!

Our first meet was on Jan 12 (we scored a 193.625) and we did not break 197 until March 10, 9 meets later (all losses except for one). At that time I never would have thought we'd even get invited to the NCAAs. But the team persevered and got better, and gave 2 great performances at the regional meet.

Gymnastics is interesting in that head to head results in the regular season mean nothing for the postseason. It's all about your national qualifying score which is the average of your top 3 road/neutral site scores plus your top 3 remaining scores with the #1 score dropped. Although we only one head to head meet our scores were good enough to rank 18th and a high ceiling given the improvement over the course of the season. It would take a big down turn in the program (or covid pandemic) to not even qualify for postseason.
