Kate Paye Press Conference

Am I remembering this correctly? Did Kate walk on and then earn a scholarship? Was she MVP one year?

Yes, she did walk on, then earn a scholarship. But one bit of scuttlebutt at the time was that Tara was so confident that she'd come to Stanford, no matter what, that she didn't offer Kate a scholarship until Kate proved so good that she had to offer one.

For a while I helped call all the new admits to congratulate them and answer any questions they had about Stanford.
Kate Paye was one of my calls. I had no idea who she was...she was just another name on my list.
Kate said thanks but her older brother had already answered all her questions.
I said, "Oh, does your older brother go to Stanford? What year is he?"
I recall that she was very sweet and patient with me.

John was QB when I was at Stanford. I remember when Kate first played on the basketball team, many fans thought of her simply as John's little sister.

Lest we forget what a great athlete John Paye was. He was only the second student athlete (Quinn Buckner-Indiana) to start for their school's football and basketball teams as a true freshman. It certainly wasn't easy to follow Elway, but John did very well (got to the pros) despite being on a bad team.

I remember John Paye quite well, fondly.
This press conference with Kate feels far more important than a lot of other "new coach" press conferences. Can she do enough to keep Iriafen? Can she do enough to attract a couple of grad transfers to support Iriafen? Can she do enough to improve the quality of our entering classes, when even Tara had her lowest ranked class in more than a decade heading into next year? Will she keep the existing group of assistant coaches together, or will there be changes? How involved will Tara be going forward?
This conference will be up on Youtube and watched by every potential recruit and transfer player, most of whom have only the vaguest idea of who Kate Paye is. This is her chance to shine. I'd like to see an upbeat, professional performance with a very clear plan and sense of purpose. It would be terrific if Muir arms her with a positive announcement or two about NIL and transfers that she could make.
She really needs an A+ performance to reassure waverers and dispel anxieties.
In the dozens of talks I have heard Kate give in the past, I will say she has improved markedly over the years. She did not initially come across at chalk talks as being very friendly, we rarely saw a sense of humor, and she never revealed very much of interest. In the last couple of years in particular she has seemed more confident, more humorous, more revealing, and more engaging I hope the more recent Kate comes through in the presser today.

I always enjoy reading your posts. I didn’t think of any of this and you sure gave me lots more optimism. The press conference is coming a little later than I thought so maybe you pointed out some things that may happen! Keeping Kiki would definitely be a brobdingnagian step in this transition.

Well, I thought Kate spoke eloquently about her background and continuity and the Stanford sisterhood. No question she is a bright and committed, passionate head coach.
There were no surprises, however, and the press asked few substantive questions. Iriafen was conspicuously not mentioned as a returning senior, so I guess that ship has truly sailed. She seemed enthused about using the transfer portal in select situations, but stated the obvious that Stanford cannot build entire teams using that method. She mentioned that Tara first contemplated retiring in 2011, which is a few years earlier than I thought.
The Daily reporter asked about new rules announced by the NCAAA today. No one else in the room seemed to know much about them. Eager to hear more.

- Schools can now identify and facilitiate NIL deals directly with 3rd parties (NOTE: This is an area where Stanford could dominate it's competition if it wanted to, but that would probably be to the chagrin of many CardBoarders :)
- Unlimited transfers without sitting

Per Kate's presser, Jeannette Pohken is the new assistant coach, a promotion for her. So we now have a coaching staff of four Stanford grads plus Tempe. Will there be a new associate head coach named? If so, most likely to be Katie S. And even if not, I'd guess there is a rank order among the assistants.

Personally, I didn't find KP's inaugural presser particularly impressive. Lots of niceties, emphasis on continuity, but little real substance. Wouldn't it have been impressive if Paye had confronted the Iriafin issue head on in an intelligent and candid way? Not to be. Lots of platitudes ("being competitive"), not much spark with one exception: her alleged comment to Professor Brady of PoliSci ("Not with that diet!"). No real indication about what her approach to coaching will be. She was unwilling to indicate any way whatsoever in which her approach to coaching the team will differ from Tara. Perhaps to be expected with Tara in the audience. Perhaps KP will open up a bit in due course.

Well, you have to cut her some slack. I mean, it's not as if she has had very much time to give any thought to how she intends to approach being Stanford's Head Coach. Oh, wait...
As for the Kiki situation, the way things stand right now [and I readily concede there are probably a lot of facts we don't know], it looks like it's Kyle Smith 1, Kate Paye 0.

Coach Paye did just fine. The fact that all of the assistant coaches are staying on board with Jeanette sliding into the open slot is a great sign. I expect the remaining roster to stay intact aside from Kiki. The transition will be as smooth as possible for a new head coach. I wasn't disappointed in her press conference at all. If anything, my reaction is she's prepared and ready for this job.

Unfortunately, the remaining roster less KIKi is about a middle of the pack ACC team. I’m hoping Kate is working hard to upgrade. And I hope we get people like Ogden signed to attractive NIL deals or she will be gone after next year. We may not like this Brave New World but we have to get damned good at it or forget about championships and deep runs in the NCAA tournament.

I expect the remaining roster to stay intact aside from Kiki. The transition will be as smooth as possible for a new head coach. I wasn't disappointed in her press conference at all. If anything, my reaction is she's prepared and ready for this job.
Obviously, I was offering my assessment of how KP did at her inaugural presser, NOT of her degree of preparedness or readiness for the head coaching job. After all the years that she's been Tara's heir apparent, for her NOT to be prepared and ready for the job would be borderline incomprehensible.
