ASU just beat UCLA in a reverse sweep, 15-8 in the 5th set. So we are now tied for the lead in the PAC-12. But tough road trip to the Washington schools next week, WSU (which swept UO today) and then UW.

Indeed! This road trip to WA state to end the first half of PAC 12 play is crucial for Stanford:
- 25th ranked WSU's is now teeming with confidence on the heels of sweeping their last 4 matches vs. Arizona, ASU, OSU and 13th ranked Oregon, with all of these on the road;
- 10th ranked Washington is starting to regain their top form after a reverse sweep @ 13th ranked Oregon, followed today by a sweep @ OSU where they had a scorching .512 hitting %
I predict they split this road trip but with the best aggregate of talents in the PAC 12 continuously improving in every facet of the game, plus hopefully a collective sense of urgency and some killer instinct, Stanford definitely has what it takes to win both matches.

This is where I got the info Leah Clayton violated team rules. She was averaging 4.33 kills.
I don't know what she did but I feel sorry for the kid. She started out at Liberty University, transferred to East Tennessee State, sat out a year after transferring to Colorado, and then decided to come back for an extra Covid year only to be suspended.

The "indefinite" nature of the suspension and the coach's comment that “The party line is she is suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules" don't sound like the coach imposed the suspension, and don't sound like the violation was of team rules -- but who knows? or cares?

Yeah, I read it the same way. If it's the party line, you're not supposed to say explicitly say it's the party line cuz ironically that really means it's something else and you're force to say the party line.

I went down the list looking for Oregon State and stopped there. I couldn't imagine there would be a PAC-12 team even farther down the list. RPI ranks strength of schedule but most people look at it how good a team is. Are there 235 teams better than Cal? No, probably not even a hundred.

Same here.
I look at Tennessee which has an outstanding RPI ranking of # 6 this week.
Compare that with their much lower AVCA ranking of #21 last week.
And their much lower Volleytalk ranking (which I respect a lot) of #19 last week and this week.
And looking at Tennessee's body of work so far vs Top 25 teams:
W (3-2) vs Baylor
L (2-3) vs Pittsburgh
L (0-3) at Purdue
And that's it ?!?!
Then I look at Stanford with current RPI ranking of #16 this week.
And has a comparable AVCA ranking of #18 last week and most likely #15 or #16 this week.
And has a slightly higher Volleytalk (which I respect a lot) ranking of #13 this week.
And looking at Stanford's body of work so far vs. Top 25 teams:
W (3-1) vs Florida
L (0-3) at Texas
L (1-3) vs Minnesota (neutral site)
W (3-2) vs Penn State (neutral site)
W (3-1) vs Nebraska
L (2-3) at Kentucky
L (2-3) vs UCLA
L (2-3) at Oregon
W (3-1) vs. Utah
Hmmmm....
I don't get it....
And they are going to primarily use this for NCAA tournament seedings?
Yikes!

The AVCA poll (Division I coaches) just came out. Stanford at #15.
https://www.avca.org/polls/di-women/10-18-2021.html
Georgia Tech at #13. They have one really strong hitter and an average team supporting her. I expect them to trip up later this season.
Penn State at #14. They have two very tough matches this weekend on the road and could very easily go 0-2.
Of course the AVCA poll is mostly for fans to argue about and not worth much else. Some of the coaches' votes make it clear they either have an agenda or don't look at all the results.
For RPI, Stanford is at a cross-roads. I'm hoping for at least one win this coming weekend. Two wins and I'd feel pretty good about a top 16 seed.

RPI is a very simple-minded calculation. If Team A beats #1 Pitt and loses to #333 Podunk Community College, and Team B loses to Pitt and beats #333, A and B will have the same base RPI. The only difference is that Team A would get a small bonus for "good win" and a penalty for a "bad loss" (not sure how much those adjustments would offset).
And yes, it is a primary tool for the committee come tournament time.

My gut feel is that this vastly improving young Stanford squad will split their road trip to WA state this week, to end the 1st half of PAC 12 hostilities at 7-3. Then, they make their momentous move during the 2nd half, taking advantage of a more favorable home/road schedule (home matches vs. the OR and WA teams, road matches vs. the AZ and Mountain teams, culminating on the road vs. USC and Cal) and a team clicking on all cylinders to finish PAC 12 play on either a 9-1 or 10-0 run, for a final PAC 12 record of either 16-4 or 17-3, and an overall record of either 21-7 or 22-6. This, plus wins over Florida, Penn State and Nebraska during their OOC schedule, should be good enough to give them a Top 16 seed in the forthcoming NCAA tournament for the right to host the first two rounds.
That's why I earlier brought up the initial PAC 10/PAC 12 struggles of those Stanford 2004 and 2016 national championship teams who were ALSO both led by a freshman setter (KEHOE in 2004 and GRAY in 2016, and now MINER in 2021). The 2004 team started PAC 10 play with a 7-3 record, then rattled off 8 straight wins to finish PAC 10 with a 15-3 record, while their 2016 counterparts started PAC 12 play with a middle-of-the-pack 5-4 record, then won 10 of their final 11 PAC 12 matches to finish PAC 12 with a 15-5 record.
Question is, does this current 2021 Stanford team have a fiery eventual 1st Team All-American, like Oganna NNAMANI in 2004 and Inky AJANAKU in 2016, to will them to the Final 4 and eventually to the National Championship? Well.....that still remains to be seen.
But, hey! All I want right now, like all of you, is for Stanford to be able to host the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament, so we can continue to see them play at Maples....

A statistical analysis posted on VT gives Stanford a 9% chance of being in the top 16 RPI at the end of the regular season.
I'm a little more optimistic than that. And RPI isn't everything. Even at 17 or 18, Stanford could well host the first two rounds. The committee has been kind to Stanford in the past.
Beyond that, I don't expect to see them in the final four this year.

Geez, I'm the least optimistic WVB fan on Cardboard by far and I think the odds are better than 9%.
I agree the selection committee has been kind to Stanford through the years based on their reputation. Nebraska is looking good lately and that will be pointed out as a good win. I personally think matches early in the season should be given much less weight than matches in the last two weeks of the season.
I'll be happy with this team getting through the first two rounds.

Well, honestly, that's what I predict, too. They'll probably make it past the first week, but will be faced with the daunting prospect of beating Texas, Louisville, or Wisconsin in the Round of 16.
The thing is, this current young Stanford team, no matter how talented (3 Top 2 players, another 3 Top 5 players, and another Top 10 player coming out of HS) and how promising and vastly improving as we speak, does not seem to have that SENSE OF URGENCY yet this year, unlike those 2004 and 2016 championship teams who were willed by the strong desire for glorious exits for their respective senior leaders NNAMANI in 2004 and AJANAKU in 2016. Their lone senior starter Holly CAMPBELL is probably already content with having been part of two consecutive national champions during her freshman and sophomore campaigns, and even moreso as a starting MB for both of those teams with illustrious achievements.
But in an interview, Caitie BAIRD talked about leaving their own legacy, and I believe that Stanford will be one of the top favorites to make the Final Four and the national championship for the next two years, especially if Kendall KIPP decides to use her covid year for her 5th year during the 2023 season.

RPI Futures this week predict that Stanford will lose 5 of their remaining 12 PAC 12 matches, to finish PAC 12 with a 13-7 record and 18-10 overall.
Sure, this is possible, especially if this team suddenly becomes discombobulated by a season-ending injury to one of their key players. Otherwise, I say they lose two more matches, maybe three at the maximum.....
