This Wednesday-Sunday games trip is causing the team to miss a lot of school. So much for scheduling to try to minimize travel and time away from school. I wonder if TV had anything to do with it . . .

The TV announcers suggested the team does not find it worth flying back to Stanford before next week's games.

Interesting; I was going to ask about that. It's one thing if both matches had been all the way on the East Coast, but since the distance between Dallas and Pittsburgh is 1100 miles (versus 1500 miles between Dallas and SFO), I wondered if being able to get back and sleep a couple nights in their own beds (not to mention not missing Friday classes) would be worth the extra flight.

I asked about the travel on VT, and a usually reliable poster said Hambly had said at a chalk talk that they would fly home after SMU and head to Pittsburgh later in the week.
Those 22 SEs were really hard to watch. Nonetheless, I am totally impressed
with the OH 1-2 punch of RUBIN and KURT in this match, and immense credit
goes to MINER for her impressive setting to both leftside hitters.

In the 2nd set at 12-11 (and repeated at 1-0 in the 3rd), the announcers said "Stanford, in the midst of a week-long road trip, will stay here in Dallas for a few more days and then head to Pittsburgh."
It concerns me if the players (and their teachers) didn't plan for this extended absence until the last minute. (But, for the sake of the volleyball performance, blowing off going to classes is probably better, given that Stanford WVB is in the ACC and has to travel so much. Sigh.)
While so much was made of the service errors by Stanford (and the woman announcer miss-stated what Hambly said about them), Stanford's slide-out percentage was 65.8% (SMU 60.7%). (In the SMU-Pitt match that SMU won, the SO% were 55.2%(SMU) and 59.4%)
Btw, I thought our digs were really good.

At a chalk talk a month ago or more Hambly talked about travel and that they would go from Dallas to Pittsburgh. Suspect he knew

The announcers noted that the team would spend Thursday and Friday in Dallas doing their schoolwork. I think we all knew this was coming. But it was either the ACC or the Mountain West.
We have a minor medical emergency in the household today. I probably won’t get the game posted on YouTube until Friday. And please don’t worry. It’s really minor, but it needed to be taken care of today.
Edit Oct 17 5:54 pm pdt: Day went smoother than expected. Uploaded video, Youtube munching it right now. Should be available by 7 pm to fill out your evening schedule.

If the team flew back to Stanford this morning they would probably still fly out to Pittsburg tomorrow afternoon. Spend Saturday practicing at the venue, lift weights, and have a team meeting prior to a relatively early Sunday match.

Way too much time in airplanes. Pretty sure they're staying in Dallas -- that's what the announcers said on Wednesday's match.

I assume we will be a #2 regional seed in the first NCAA tournament top 16 at this point presented at half time of the Pitt game on Sunday. I wouldn't be surprised if whether we are a #1 seed or a #2 seed will depend on whether we beat Louisville at home in our final match of the season.
Hope we play better against Pitt with much fewer hitting errors and Jordan/Kurt hitting consistently, and start out strong (not with 9 hitting errors in set one). Defense has looked good. Unsure who will be the defensive specialist playing at the end of the year. It started with Beaven as the #1 with Cawa or Pringle being #2. In the SMU match It was Pringle and Cawa. Perhaps Beaven was sick or, more likely I think, it's still a battle between the 3 of them. Seems like Cawa will probably be the libero next year unless incoming freshman Spencer Etzler develops quickly to the speed of the college game.

When is halftime?
After set 2.
It was reduced a couple of years ago to typically 5 minutes, so it's not too perceptible as halftime anymore.

Stanford at Pitt Sunday noon PT on ESPN.

This article is about the "First Reveal" of top sixteen teams as determined by NCAA selection committee. AVCA poll is not one of the committee's metrics so top 16 will be somewhat different than poll.
"The reveal is based on the criteria used to select and seed the 64 teams for the volleyball championship. It includes strength of schedule, Rating Percentage Index, head-to-head competition, results versus common opponents, significant wins and losses and locations of contests."

Looking on the optimistic side. Stanford only plays Pitt once during the regular season. Stanford's next two games are against Cal (2-6 in conference).
I think Stanford could actually win all of the remaining matches going into the final regular season match against Louisville. And playing Louisville at home there is a reasonable chance Stanford could redeem itself.
I haven't been following RPI this season. Based on previous years losing to Pitt will not move the RPI needle much. A win against SMU and a loss against Pitt might even slightly improve Stanford's RPI.
Last week's NCAA RPI. Stanford at #6. This week's official NCAA RPI comes out tomorrow.

Stanford still has 12 matches remaining, including trips to Berkeley, Tallahassee, Coral Gables, Durham, Chapel Hill and Atlanta. I don't think you take any of them for granted. A lot can happen between now and November 30, the last match of the regular season.
I see that Stanford plays Cal next Friday at Maples. I will be up for homecoming. No reunion commitments. Just nice to be on campus for homecoming. I think I will go watch volleyball. Is there a usual Cardboard meeting at home matches?

Seems about right; we are clearly not in the top tier of Nebraska, Pitt, Penn State, and Louisville, but we are probably one of the best of the rest (or close to it). We struggle mightily against the top teams (we’ve been swept by three of them in not especially close matches), but we have beaten the teams we should be beating including some pretty good ones. That should translate to a #2 regional seed.
