We made quick work of the Gamecocks. Literally. My buddy texted me about two hours after the match started asking why the video links weren't working. I had to tell him that the links were working fine but the match was already over. 4-0 sweep for the good guys.
We also caught a break with #12 Miss State upsetting #5 Ohio State meaning that we'll face the Bulldogs in the quarters on Friday in Waco. For comparison, Miss State lost to South Carolina, 4-3, in the semifinals of the SEC tournament and beat the Gamecocks, 4-3, in the regular season. We both lost to NC State (the Wolfpack lost in the super regionals as the #9 seed to #8 Columbia) and I believe those were the only common opponents.
Knock on wood, we should get past Miss State which would likely setup a rematch versus #1 Wake Forest. In February, we dropped a 4-2 to decision to the Deacons in Winston-Salem that was closer than the score would suggest.
I'm doubtful this squad has the firepower to walk out of Waco with a title (#2 TCU on the other side of the bracket scares me more than Wake) but it's possible and definitely the best Stanford men's team since 2003 (a team that I'm still convinced would've won it all had Ryan Haviland not gone pro midseason!).
