I'd argue that no one in the bottom half of the NCAA basketball tournament belongs, but I don't see that scaling back to 32 teams, of course scaling back from 64 to 32 makes less sense there as they play two games in three days so they would have lost revenue the first weekend, getting rid of the "first four" would seem like a good idea to me....
the pro leagues seem to think the more the merrier.....
NFL 14 of 32 make the playoffs (and look at the NFC south this year, the best team could finish at 9-8 or they could have a three way tie at 8-9, do they belong in the playoffs?)
NBA 20 (if you count the play-in round, otherwise 16) of 30 make the playoffs
MLB 12 of 30 make the playoffs
NHL 16 of 32 make the playoffs
given the direction of college football and basketball they might be going in the same direction.....
