I mostly agree with your analysis. However, there is a serious "side effect" of the CFP taking the top 10% and March Madness taking the top 20%. The teams that end up in the next tier of Bowl games are very unhappy they are there and as a result quite a few players will "opt out" for various reasons. These teams (and their fans) often consider their season somewhat of a failure despite being in the top 10%. Those that do play realize this is not all that useful to their future.

I'd argue that no one in the bottom half of the NCAA basketball tournament belongs, but I don't see that scaling back to 32 teams, of course scaling back from 64 to 32 makes less sense there as they play two games in three days so they would have lost revenue the first weekend, getting rid of the "first four" would seem like a good idea to me....

the pro leagues seem to think the more the merrier.....

for TV it is money (and for the colleges too) which is why I think the playoffs will expand.  And while Cinderellas in March Madness are a nice story I'm not convinced they actually materially increase TV ratings.

Gotta say big congrats to David Bailey - he looked awesome in the Oregon game - kinda makes me sad that we had 
wasted a legit top 10 draft pick talent during the recent malaise and that he had to go elsewhere to really shine... but good luck to him and just hope he is not around when the Rams use the Falcons pick (49ers fan).

Despite being drafted as TT player I look forward to following his NFL career and expect much havoc to follow in many a backfield!
