I think this lawsuit is important. Regardless of the merits, and in my thinking they are irrelevant, I think that facing a plethora of lawsuits against donors, Collective members and schools will eventually drive athletic programs out of the business of hiring football teams.. directly. I foresee a contractual arrangement with an arms length for profit set of “agents” who will provide a school with a football team. They will negotiate with players and cut deals. Eventually the will negotiate and manage media rights , operate the stadium and in general be responsible for all off field activities. They could eventually hire the coaches as welll.
This will allow the schools to wash their hands of the talent acquisition of athletes . To my surprise , fans seem agnostic about hiring players now. They just want a good team on the field to watch and cheer for.
Oh yes, the betting scandals come, and they will as players get compromised by gamblers, the schools will be insulated from the scandals.
The current system Is unstable but it will totter along until there is a forcing function for change . A Plethora of lawsuits could well be that force. Sigh, it’s nice to see the plaintiffs bar define college sports for us but it’s better than having the government do it.
