Do we know this to be true? Or was the deal that was made a decade ago decided by Muir?
That's a good and fair question.
Strictly speaking, I do not definitively know that what I assumed to be true was in fact the case, or was effectively the case.
So let me rephrase: if and to the extent that TV was allowed or encouraged to name her preferred successor, that she chose KP, and that BM accepted TV's suggestion and offered the job to KP without doing a serious nation-wide search, then I would find that unwise and unacceptable.

I'm not sure how we could have hired someone other than KP, given her tenure sitting next to TV for all those glory years. By all rights, she should be a good WBB coach for Stanford. It's not looking that way.
Put a glide in your stride and a dip in your hip.

Well, IMHO, allowing or encouraging TVD to name a preferred successor would have beeen unwise, unacceptable and further indicative of a need for an AD who'd grow a pair and take charge of the situation - chrissakes, we're talking about the head of a purportedly major D1 athletic department here.

It’s been almost 10 now when Kate turned down usc and Washington and we all (who care)knew Kate who almost certainly would succeed Tara.
Or I know some wanted a current head coach hired like Harris Hasse or Taylor

Because if the answer to that question ranges from "hell no" to "we can accept on occasion an exceptionally academically qualified student who is a rising sophomore or a grad transfer only," then no one is going to be able to resurrect the program.
Per On3, 8 Iowa St. players will be going into the portal, and that doesn't (yet) include Audi Crooks. It's another Oregon State extinction level event in progress. Unless there is serious NCAA reform, this is the new normal, and most teams are going to see annual departures. Stanford can't field a competitive team if they insist on playing with rules that virtually no one else follows. Of course, as a fan, I might choose my kids' club soccer games over this hot mess.
Crooks is going into the portal

Absolutely agree that KP realistically had to be given the shot at head coach. If she'd been bypassed and someone else selected, then we stumbled as we have, there would be screaming about how KP was done wrong and Stanford made an egregious mistake against a longtime loyal and successful assistant coach. With ramifications throughout all our athletics that loyalty to Stanford meant nothing to the University. That being said, there can and should be a realistic timeline / shelf life on how long to carry on as-is if things are not working out great.

IMO that should be one year. If she can't get us in the Big Dance next year, I would say it is time to start looking around.

You wrote that you're not sure how Stanford could have hired someone other than KP, given her tenure. Well, an associate head coach with years sitting next to the head coach doesn't have a right to be given the job, and, empirically, not all head coaches are named head coach when the former head steps down. Perhaps you mean that we couldn't have hired anyone else without it being perceived as a slight. That may be so. But I'm having trouble seeing how designating the associate head coach to be the successor without a serious search is the best thing to do for the team or the school all things considered. (Obviously it could have turned out that the associate head coach emerged from the search as the strongest candidate.)

The question I have is- Is the WBB program's mission the same- "We want to compete for national championships" (Kate Paye's first press conference), or has it changed to something else? Does your new AD want Stanford WBB to once again become an elite program or is he satisfied with the program's performance the last two seasons?
If he wants Stanford to become a championship contender, he must fire coach Paye who is a great person and human being, but incapable of turning the program around, and must conduct a thorough search for a coach who can. I follow WBB nationally and the game has changed dramatically, even over the last 3-4 years; especially the offensive schemes. Coach Paye doesn't seem to grasp that reality- and adjust and I'm afraid that another season with her at the helm will put the program deeper behind.
