Which coach is in the most danger if they (gasp) lose to the mighty Cardinal?
- Tosh Lupoi. First season. Bears have lost four of five. $22.6 million contract, 80% of which would need to get paid. Probably safe, but if he finishes 3-9 or 4-8, 2027 will be a consequential year. Staff changes plausible.
- Jeff Brohm. Louisville is 4-3, which is a bit disappointing after losses to SF and NCSU. All three defeats by 3 pts. or less. Won't get fired this season -- extended through 2033. If they lose to Stanford, his staff is at risk.
- James Franklin. In his first season at VaTech, they're 6-2 including tonight's 20-16 win over Clemson. Five year contract worth $41.75 million through 2030. Very secure. Lots of patience.
- Rhett Lashee. SMU is 6-1, #23 coming into today's game, they're 18-3 since joining the ACC and reached the CFP in 2024. No meaningful risk.
I think they're all pretty safe, but their staff bears some risk if they show poorly vs. Stanford.

I don't think that's true. Both in terms of score and yards per play margin relative to opponent Georgia Tech was slightly better. Regardless, come on, obviously Reich's Florida State and especially Cal games were far better than anything we've seen from Pritchard. Last year's Big Game definitely the last "several years" highlight. Before that, we did beat Notre Dame on the road in 2022.
Who said anything about Pritchard?

ENCORE at LOUV?
Analysts are with LOUV (4-3) 95%+
https://www.espn.com/college-football/ga...louisville
ESPN SP+ has LOUV at #26 and Stanford at #110. They beat SMU.
And bring a very potent Rush / Pass Offense. Without Matt Rose at LB, this will be tough.
https://www.espn.com/college-football/st...-fbs-teams
Their strange loss @NCST was with three fumbles lost.
Losing to OleMiss by just 3, is not a downtick. 41-38.
And they lost to a very good WAKE team, as we found out.

And, was that transfer Cole Tabb starring in the Bearcats upset win over Texas Tech last weekend? 173 yards worth.

My guess:
1. We thought they'd sit back closer to the sticks
2. And even if we didn't get the first down, we'd get 10+ yards, which would put them inside their own 25 anyway
I think if your kicker has the leg you go for the FG, even if it's a 25% chance to convert. But with our snaps going all over the place maybe we are just that scared right now.
In his press conference this week, Tavita said the 4th and 20 call was a "stupid call" by him. I wasn't entirely clear whether he was referring to the decision to go for it, the playcall itself, or both. But I appreciated that he called himself out on it when the question was about 4th down decisions in general and not that specific one.

I'm hoping Emmett Kenney isn't in the doghouse. That was his time to shine, and the decision to go for it was...not Stanford-like.

Didn't get the sense that was the case.
Going for it on 4th and 20 from that distance wasn't a terrible decision, the play call itself (a screen pass) was, which I think is what Pritchard openly and humbly acknowledged.
Had we not kicked the last field goal when we were up by 7 (I think on a 4th and 3 from the 15) in the 4th quarter would have raised alarms. Kenney made it and proved to be the difference. Hopefully builds some confidence too.

I don't know any team parents personally, but I was sitting among them when Kenney made the field goal.
I was more happy for Kenney than for the game score.
The game is really different now that I have kids who are the same age as the players and I look at everyone on the field on both teams as just someone's kid.

I'll take your word for it, but when I saw the offense going out there on 4th and 20, my first thought was "Pritchard hates Emmett." Against an on-paper-superior opponent, you have to take the points and not give them any hope. Stanford ended up giving NCST some hope in the first half and in the fourth quarter, and that got dangerous. But thankfully the team righted the ship. Additionally, I still have faith in Kenney, and I think the offense gets a boost when we take the points. Bird in the hand is worth a hope and prayer of 4th and 20.

It may or may not be about Kenney - recall that we are playing a backup long snapper, and he almost lost the game for us with a bad snap Flintoft and Kenney did great work to salvage for the ultimately winning field goal - but it’s obvious Pritchard does not have faith in the place kicking operation. He has politely alluded to this in discussing certain situational decisions. More importantly, we can all see what he’s chosen to do time and time again. We do not try long field goals.
Let’s be real: Kenney has had a bad year. He missed a 33 yarder against Hawaii, made 24 and 30 yarders against Miami, made a 29 yarder against Georgia Tech, missed a 46 yarder and made a 43 yarder against Wake Forest, missed a 35 yarder against Elon, and made a 31 yarder against NC State. Kenney hasn’t been reliable and Pritchard hasn’t relied on him. I don’t know if it’s more Kenney’s fault or an overall kicking operation. What’s clear is our kicking has been bad this year and Pritchard regularly riverboat gambles rather than risk the aggravation of kicking without getting points to show for it.
PFF grades Kenney the 125th place kicker this year after being 76th last year and 18th the year before. Kenney had a pretty great story of biding his time for years and then being a bona fide weapon as a senior. Unfortunately, he’s been truly terrible as both a fifth and sixth year player and this is a damaging use of money/opportunity cost. It cheeses me off that Bironas stupidly got himself injured. We’ve been suffering with the ghost of Emmet Kenney for two years.

Yeah, I can't know for sure either.
It sure would have been nice to see that Pritchard had the confidence to send the unit in that situation, but FWIW, my rationale is that a 50+ yard field goal is far from a gimme (50% or so in the college game). In the very likely event that it's missed, it may further erode the confidence of a kicking team that has struggled a bit this year. So maybe it had more to do with love than hate?
Punting may have actually been the right choice to try and pin them inside the 10, but I guess Pritchard wants to stay away from anything that associates him with the turtling regime.
I too have faith in Kenney, hope to see him knocking in many more in the future.

This is from some time ago, and used NFL data, so not quite applicable:

Generally speaking, after about 4th and 10, the decision really should be between punting and kicking the field goal, with the dividing line being around the 37 yard line (54 yard field goal). At 4th and 20, with a suspect kiking team, we probably should have punted it away.
