Class of 2017

A quote from Drukarev on five-star cornerback Darnay Holmes: "If Akina is still around, it will be hard for any other school to get Holmes."
Please clear the field! The game is not over!

"If Akina is still around"??? Is there something afoot there or is his contract up after this season? Inquiring minds would like to know...

There isn't any concern right now, but inevitable future offers leave a question like this open. Hopefully, he loves the way our coaching staff operates versus other schools not to mention working with Stanford athletes (fewer headaches off-the-field or in the classroom).
If I had a dollar every time I was distracted, I wish I had some ice cream.

I'm going to guess with Akina that, given his resume, at some point some NFL team could float him an offer. That might be as big a threat as another college program (unless he has made it clear at some point that he sees himself as simply a college coach, but I've never heard that).

My big regret from last week's media day is that I didn't get to ask Shaw about Akina and his impact on the defense this past year. It would be great to know his opinion.

The guy has been coaching in college for longer than I've been alive. I'm not sure exactly when he turned into a DB guru, but it seems like that's also been a while. Things change, obviously, but he's in his late 50's and has been a college DB coach or DC for like 30 years, it's probably just what he wants to do.

Mills is the 247 consensus #5 pro-style QB. (Which means little so early in the process, of course, but just for a heuristic...) Offers from Auburn, UCLA, Louisville...

Whoa. Shaw breaks with past practice and offers *two* QBs: https://twitter.com/JakeBentley19/status...1535177729
Bentley is the consensus #9 pro-style QB (per 247 again), and has offers from Auburn, Clemson, Duke...

Good point. And the same logic applies to anxiety about Akina becoming a DC in the college game. If it hasn't happened so far, with his track record, is it really likely to happen at this point.
Could be that Akina is one of those rare people who has really found his calling, and won't be swayed by a somewhat larger paycheck and status to drift from it. If that's the case, its good news for us.

It looks like Tyreke Johnson is our first offer for the class of 2018. Time to start a new thread?
If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)
