Plunkett and Luck are testimony to what happens when a bad team drafts a great QB. But Trent Edwards probably took the biggest pounding of them all at Buffalo.

I assume it is because he has Tanner McKee coming in in that class. Yes, McKee could opt out, but he probably won't. It may not make any sense to Cardboarders but it does to Shaw, and he is the only one whose vote counts.
Haven't we lost a pretty highly ranked recruit or two at QB to BYU after they came back from a mission?

Although it is doubtful, wouldn't Costello be able to come back as a fifth year senior (assuming no one takes his job)?

To my knowledge, we have only lost one QB to BYU coming back from a mission (Taysom Hill).
Here's why we lost him.

People always use that as an example of how we shouldn't count on players returning from missions, but I believe it is pretty rare that we lose anyone.
Also, McKee said that short of something drastic like a head coach quitting his commitment was rock solid.

Didn’t Kirk Chambers come back from his mission in Dec, participate in spring practice and then start as a true freshman the following year?

To expand on this, since Taysom Hill we've averaged ~1 LDS missionary signee per year. All of them have come to Stanford post-mission thus far. There's a 2020 LDS guy on the radar as well.

I obviously want KJ to return, but surely he would be a better long-term fit in the pros, even right now, than Lamar Jackson, a first round pick last year.
I fully expect, whenever he decides to declare, to be one of the first QB's off the board. If it is next year as opposed to this year, I can see him being a late 1st-2nd round pick.

To the best of my recollection, Kirk Chambers started school at Stanford in the fall of 1997, was on the roster during the 1997 season but did not play (making 1997 a redshirt year), went on his mission in January 1998, returned to Stanford in January 2000, participated in spring practice, and became a starting tackle in the fall of 2000.

The 2000 Season: Returned to The Farm as a 21-year old freshman after his two-year mission ... In his first season at Stanford, Kirk earned the starting assignment at left tackle and held that position throughout the '00 campaign ... He started all 11 games and was an integral part of the Cardinal's offensive line ... Co-winner with Chris Lewis of the Menlo-Atherton Trophy as the team's top freshman. The 1998-99 Seasons: Did not play football while spending both seasons as part of a Mormon Mission in Berlin, Germany.
In High School: A SuperPrep All-American as an offensive lineman as a senior at Provo High School in 1997

After high school, Chambers departed for a two-year LDS mission to Berlin, Germany, and upon his return, he enrolled at Stanford as a freshman in 2000. He's started all 35 games since for the Cardinal.

Draft evaluators would disagree with your assessment. The best I've seen him rated on any board this year is 4th round.

This is misleading to the extent it implies that Kirk Chambers played the 1997 season at Provo High School. Chambers is in the Stanford media guide for the 1997 season, listed as a true freshman. His last season in high school was 1996.
By the way, Chambers is now a teacher, coach, and athletic director at Provo High School.

"If it is next year as opposed to this year, I can see him being a late 1st-2nd round pick." I never said he would be anything more than a Day 2-3 pick this year.

Plenty of angst to go around. If Mills IS healthy might be better for him to gain experience for 2020 since so many have written off 2019 already. Plus he can try to beat Cal with Butterfield starting as a true freshman.
