I was wondering about the crowd size. When the camera panned across the way (toward the benches) and upward, that side only looked 1/2 -2/3 full. The student section seemed pretty full - this was about halfway through H2. Did it start out full, but empty out as the outcome stared becoming more apparent?
Now thinking the
kal game will be a bit too close for comfort.....

We get blown out at home, and you're wondering about crowd size?!?
I wonder how the sushi at Maples compares to that at Stanford Stadium?

I’m sure many left to get home for the 49ers. Sadly it’s not a good day for either

FWIW, crowd size was capacity +. There were large groups standing at each of the four corners of the mezzanine, as well as standing along the walls of the upper sections.

ESPN says 7,880, "standing room only" at Maples. So we had that going for us.

I was there and watched the whole depressing blowout. 1. Cam Boozer was unstoppable, both as a scorer and a rebounding machine. 2. Duke's set plays worked, ours didn't. 3. Okorie was hounded all day, often doubled. He did little damage. 4. Our bigs were terrible; not athletic, couldn't finish; couldn't stop Boozer. 5. Our O sucked all day. Shot 35% from the field. Our guards sucked, except for Dent-Smith, who is a baller. He shot 7 for 15. The rest of the team shot a pathetic 12 for 39! Okorie was frustrated all day. He couldn't get into the key with his drives. Virtually all of the were cut off by Duke's D. In short, we don't have anywhere near the talent that Duke had. They took us to the woodshed and Kyle had no answers. End of story. Duke deserves its high ranking and could take it all. One last thing: we stunk up the joint with 18 TOs to Duke's 10.

Any thoughts from anyone on MV72018's conclusion & assessment, that: "In short, we don't have anywhere near the talent that Duke had."
Should the 'gap in talent' between 'Duke and Stanford' ....be that large ?
What is the root-cause of this, and are there any remedies ?

Seriously, no one who knows ball thought Stanford would win, and the oddsmakers line (Duke by 12) reflected that a blowout was very much possible.
So, I would say the day's big news, indeed, was that fans filled up Maples! It's the first time in a loooong time that happened against an oppenent not named Kal, and, honestly, I had serious doubts it would ever happen.
Now, we have some evidence that Stanford fans WOULD show up to support a team that's actually Top 25 good. That's a big-time development, imo.

We also don't have anywhere near the talent that UNC has (a $14M roster), and won that game. Hubert Davis is a horrible coach. Jon Scheyer is an excellent coach and has even more talent than UNC - 4 potential 1st-round NBA picks in his starting lineup, a yearly affair.
To answer your 3 questions:
1. Obviously not
2. There is a significant amount of dead weight ("steak eaters") on the roster - a couple of whom are actually playing, good god!!!!! - and we got killed in the portal
3. We need another ~2 seasons to fully cycle said dead weight off the roster, develop some of the "talent" we do have, and bring in more contributors - as we've seen, frosh (Okorie/Giltay) can work along with portal. Hakeem The Dream's son comes to mind next year.
As I've repeatedly said, given the net talent outflow ("getting killed in the portal"), anything even remotely close to last year's team/competitive in the ACC is miracle work. We were predicted to finish last in the ACC pre-season for good reason.

Hell, pretty much figured beforehand we were in for a big can of whoops** (with their frontline alone, I mean AYFKM?!?!?). I'd seen a DAPER FB post right after the game claiming a sell out which didn't at all jib with what I'd seen during the broadcast - remembering how DAPER use to release EUTM-esque #s for FB attendance even during this down cycle, thought I'd ask to see if they were pulling the same crap for MBB attendance. Thanks.
PS and the concessions at both venues can keep their sorry a** excuses for "sushi"

Not sure about that. Losing to the number six team in the country shouldn’t be that much of a hit.

How about when the loss was by 30 points and was an abject blowout by 10 minutes into the first half?
Going up the stairs of Section 5 and entering the arena proper about 53 minutes prior to game time, my son and I were greeted by EAR-SPLITTING NOISE from some rapper over the PA system. Then, throughout the game, there was the dude who had a red Stanford headband on and an amplified mike in his hand, running around the student section and screaming his head off about everything, including the products (e.g., Coca Cola) he was pitching (?!). After about 15 minutes I had to leave the arena to get a few minutes of respite from the bedlam. I wouldn't bring small children into that arena if it's true that their hearing is still in the formative stage. I don't remember anything like this in the Montgomery years of the Collins and Lopez Twins when the fans generated plenty of noise on their own.

For folks who go to the women's games, was it the same emcee as those? I do feel like the music can at times be a little loud in Maples but (maybe ironically) I don't find the emcee's mike to be too intense.

By contrast, I found the Stanford Band's volume level fine. It's the amplification of portable mikes and speakers to the level of Dante's Inferno, Circle 9, that bugs me.
