Maybe that flagrant gets the momentum back
But a few too many small errors in the clutch here. Swain missing 2 FTs. Agara getting stripped resulting in a 3. Ogden and Somfai fighting each other on that rebound. Down 1.

Well now down 67-64 with a minute left. Hoping for a miracle.

And the refs bail UVA out. Amazing we get screwed at home repeatedly. 32.5 left down 3 after the FTs.

At this point.. I’m not surprised.. in that replay, Nunu didn’t foul her and it wasn’t called by the ref closer to the play.. I’m so over these ACC refs.

Leaving aside the details of the play, the officiating has been genuinely vomit-worthy.

In the end it was a valiant effort but just not enough. We were up 64-62 and had a chance to go up 4 with less than 3 minutes to go, but missed both free throws, which was a killer.

Likely have to win the ACC tourney now. Maybe winning out and getting to the ACC finals gets there. Maybe. If we end up as an 11 seed or lower my 7 wins may need to be 8 - I.e. that first tournament win doesn’t buy much as an 11 seed. Doubt we can actually win the next 4 and be seeded that low, but I am too lazy to check.
The ACC tournament format is really weird.

Not sure I've ever been so exasperated watching LSJU hoops, going back to the 1970s. WBB and MBB have combined for 17 conference losses, many of which have been by single digits, others have been blowouts. Back in the glory days, WBB and MBB wouldn't lose 17 conference games in total over multiple years!

Once again, I leave a Stanford broadcast more than frustrated after losing a winnable game.
The excuse has been that we didn't have NuNu. What's today's excuse? No Talana (Marta 2.0)? The refs always sux against us, but that's probably viewing them through our cardinal-colored glasses if it's all the time.
I have confidence in coach Smith to get it done (get us consistently into the dance) since he's done it with less talent a few times. I'm not very confident coach Paye can do it as it's her first head coaching gig, and she's been used to having tons of talent (which she still has this year), and it's not looking good.

My niece left the game in actual tears… gosh, that’s the passion I want to see from the entire Stanford program.. I’ve never experienced this many losses at home in a row… it’s unacceptable.. terrible refs or not

i am troubled by subbing in MAS on
offense with under a minute left.
she comes in w 32 seconds remaining. we are on offense down by 3. lara misses a 3
at 26 seconds MAS fouls. now we are down by 5. courtney ogden subs in for MAS
timeout at 9 seconds, our ball down by 5. MAS enters for courtney.
MAS inbounds and throws the ball cross-court to the defense. turnover.
i can see subbing MAS in for defense, by why on earth sub her in on
offense?!?!? switching offense for defense in the last minute, don't you put in your best shooters on offense?
right here is where giving carly amborn zero playing time at the end of blow-out games comes back to bite us. with 3 or 5 minutes experience per game, she might have been in a position to give us another outside shooter down by 3 w 32 seconds. and we could have subbed her out on defense!

Why do you feel you have the right to say it is "unacceptable"?
There are many terms you can use to express your feelings. I suggest you use a different term.
Yes, it was a close game and it is agonizing to see them suffer this defeat after almost pulling it out. I thought the team fought back hard against an older, more experienced, taller team. More than half of their roster were transfer athletes. I was pleased that Nunu was healthy enough to play. She again showed how important she is to the team and how handicapped they were when she was out.
Regarding Lepolo, is she eligible to play another year (somewhere)?

I apologize for whatever my message made you feel. I meant unacceptable for me, seeing my team lose so much at home.. had nothing to do with coaching or playing.. I’m being a little dramatic. But gosh, like I have never known this feeling.. can I dramatic for a moment?

Some thoughts about the game and the season from an outside perspective.
In a previous lifetime, I had the opportunity to interview a fairly successful men's coach about his philosophy of coaching. He was very generous with his time and we covered a lot, but two things (he said) I'll never forget: 1) Understand the talent that you have and use that talent to your advantage to and to such an efficiency that you force your opponent to adjust. and 2) Make the other team uncomfortable.
That coach was John Wooden.
If you look at this game from those two perspectives, Virginia coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton had her team consistently executing plays that took advantage of UVA's talent (offensively) and (defensively), they made Stanford uncomfortable. With the exception of posting Agara and letting her work, coach Paye did not use her other Bigs- Somfai along with Eschmeyer's length, moving them away from the block and out to near the perimeter, turning them into screeners and passers, similar to the unproductive Stevenson.
Others have posted their thoughts on how Stanford could have won, but lost the game, and it's quite possible that Stanford might nab a few wins down the stretch with Nunu's presence. She is the stud that Stanford has needed. But I will look back on this season as Coach Paye's inability to use the talent she has with effective playmaking (rather than coming down the court and jacking up 3-point attempts, or going one on one in traffic) and (with the lack of playmaking), the inability to make Stanford opponents uncomfortable as well as the inability to adjust.
She is not the right coach for you.

On the other hand, time outs to extend the game at the end (eg to advance the ball to midcourt) probably offer a tangible benefit by saving a few seconds from the clock. The thing is they probably only work in a narrow range of scores.

Now tied at 62. Glad to see some fight from the team after being down 10 in the fourth quarter… just hope we have some left down the stretch.

Worst refs ever? I did think it was interesting that the UVA coach challenged the OOB call, and the refs looked at the video for 3+ minutes. Even if you don't get charged a timeout, that's a
much longer break than a traditional timeout. Win-win for UVA! Then they got together to discuss it for quite some time, too. It looked obvious to me from the replay that the ball went out on the UVA player, but if they're having so much trouble deciding, isn't the call on the court supposed to stand?
RE: WBB next two games -
jonnyss - 02-15-2026
yes, and wasn't that an illegal second challenge by virginia?
i was at the game. our seats are 5 rows behind the visitor bench. i thought i saw virginia challenge a call twice. both times i could clearly see the virginia coach and multiple players signaling with a one-hand-up-in-the-air circling gesture, and the refs went to the monitor.
first time, iirc uva called for a review of a foul by uva on nunu. refs let the foul on uva stand. as i read the rules, that's supposed to cost them a technical-foul free throw and use up their challenges for the game.
but then, yes, they challenged again: an out-of-bounds play initially going stanford's way was reviewed after uva challenged, then overturned near the end of the game to be uva's ball.
(there was also a ref review for possible flagrant foul, but that was not initiated by a coach's challenge)
as i understand the rules, the request for a second challenge should have resulted in another technical foul against uva, and stanford should have kept the ball. that's a big swing at the end of the game! i was shocked that the stanford coaches didn't protest the second review.
am i misunderstanding?

With that, I didn’t see it.. but our seat mates watched it on their phone and were not sure but then saw it out on VA and even one referee was pointing our direction signaling it would be ours.. then it gets announced to VA.. the ACC must have called maples before the ball got inbounded.. lol.. I mean, Hailee’s missed free throws may have been the turning point or not.. who knows… but it’s still a loss

The rule regarding appeals has changed. The
NCAA posted this change for this season
Quote:To permit coaches to appeal the following rulings: (1) an out-of-bounds violation by the officials, (2) a backcourt violation, (3)
whether team control changed before a ruled foul only if it could affect the awarding of free throws, and (4) whether the foul was
charged to the correct individual. The coaches’ appeal may be made at any time during the contest (provided it is within the window
for a proper appeal), and there is no limit to the number of appeals a coach may initiate. Unsuccessful appeals result in a charged
timeout to the team. Teams may appeal even when they have no timeouts remaining; however, when a team with no timeouts
remaining loses an appeal, they are assessed a technical foul for an excessive timeout (the penalty is two free throws, plus an awarded
throw-in to the offended team at the point of interruption).
(Note that a foul, once called, cannot be taken back. (Likewise, a common foul NOT called cannot be called on review except for an unobserved (ie, uncalled) intentional foul.) The player a common foul is charged to may be changed by this appeal process. Separately, the foul may be upgraded. IIRC, a coach can request that a foul be considered for an upgrade (a separate rule, not this one), but it is up to the refs to decide whether to review the foul for an upgrade.)
In yesterday's South Carolina @ LSU WBB game, Coach Mulkey challenged an out-of-bounds call and lost with 0:18 left, down by 3. That lost her the final timeout (meaning no opportunity to advance the ball to the front court). I'm not sure whether it was a bad decision, but the TV announcers thought so.
In the play-by-play, the loss of a timeout is simply shown as a called time out. So it is impossible to detect a failed appeal from the PxP.
A participant of this board recently expressed a (spoken) opinion that players may read this board and our posts, which can contribute to mental health issues for a player. (I would add, if not the players, then their parents or friends may read it.)
I hope players don't read this board. But if they do, I hope the players realize that much of the time, the negativity here is often the voicing of frustration at losses. In general, I think most of us are general public, not pro scouts or coaches.

I agree with most of this. Do VA Tech, UVA, Ga Tech, etc. have more talent on the roster (everyone has injuries here and there so missing Agara hurt but can't be the only reason the season has gone off the rails. Ga Tech was missing a leading scorer IIRC)? This season feels worse than last season. More talent and used to the ACC this year. Given the way the team is losing at home to very beatable teams, "unacceptable" doesn't seem too strong to me. I find the way this season is going to be unacceptable. Making the NCAAs was not that high a bar. 1-7 in the past 8 games is acceptable for a team that has plenty of talent enough to make the NCAAs? This mess is how the season finishes? Maybe I'm off base but that seems a bit not good to me.
