Re: Richard Sherman = classless - Canalejas - 01-19-2014

I became a Richard Sherman fan during the Greatest Upset Ever and I stayed his fan when he taunted Trojans by looking into the cameras two years later, flashed the 'SC victory sign, and proudly proclaimed, "2-0 at the Coli, baby! Fight on!"

This is who Richard Sherman is and I'm happy to cheer for him.  I probably always will unless he's facing off against Andrew Luck or Toby Gerhart.

I keep up with pro sports to some extent; while his mouth isn't unique for a pro sports player, his post-game "interview" easily goes down as the worst I've seen on live television.

Re: Richard Sherman = classless - GoodGrief - 01-19-2014

If Richard Sherman went to school anywhere but Stanford, I would hate him. But since he went to Stanford, I can only shake my head and chuckle, "That's our Sherman!"

Honestly, I think I love Sherman more and more because of all his Sherman-ness. As somebody on this board (Publius?) said, he is probably the single most important recruiting factor (besides Coach Shaw) that we have out there. I think smart, talented kids from fortunate backgrounds like Andrew Luck will always consider Stanford. I think smart, talented, trash-talking, inner-city kids wouldn't necessarily consider Stanford without Sherman demonstrating that they can thrive there.

Go Sherman--hope him and Baldwin repeat those performances at the Super Bowl.

The NFL is a kind of WWF.  Sherman is perfect there. He and Marshawn should do duets.

In a blood sport like football, I can't manage to get bothered by some innocuous trash talk.  Much preferable to the stone-faced coachspeak that's offered up in most interviews.

Here's a different perspective from my reaction. A bit more distance than I have. Puts this in perspective pretty effectively IMO

Are you actually equating philandering to a heat-of-the-moment rant?? I fail to see how the two are even remotely comparable.

I remember during the Cowboys last Super Bowl run in '95, FOX gave a live, "non-delayed" mic to Michael Irvin during the trophy presentation on the Texas Stadium field and he preceded to curse up a storm, calling out everyone who had doubted the Boys ability to win without Jimmie Johnson.

If the media is going to continue to shove microphones in front of athletes, especially immediately  after a supercharged game between bitter rivals, the world should expect a whole lot more rawness.

As for crabtree and Sherman, let's just say they won't be exchanging christmas gifts.  Crabtree's own locker room interview was the definition of sour grapes.  To paraphrase,"sure Sherman made a nice play there, but that was his only play."

Of course, lost on the post game kerfuffle was the fact that it was an amazing, game-winning play.  Too bad Sherman will be remembered for the aftermath.

BC

P.S. Let us not forget that that this is the same Sherman who cought the pass on fourth and ten at the sticks as he was getting nailed to keep the drive alive in the greatest upset ever.  For that alone he will never have to buy himself a drink if we should ever meet.

Out of respect for the posters on this board I have paused, reflected and tried to get different perspectives on Sherman's rant.  Over time it has been demonstrated that many of you have much deeper insights and connections to many of the people and events that are discussed here.  So I have listened to the burst several times, examined my reaction for my own biases and tried to remind myself of all the possible facets of Richard Sherman's personality about which I am ignorant.  The burst, however, is not all I know about him.

After that effort on my part, let me say this:  I feel bad for him.  That is simply not a beautiful way to live.  I cannot imagine that his burst reflects any degree of inner confidence and peace.  I am sorry for whatever troubles give rise to that expression of anger and outrage, but one thing about which I feel confident is that Crabtree did not cause them.  It is not impossible for Sherman to react in a manner more similar to the way Andrew Luck would.

As a result of all this pondering, I am not as angry at Richard Sherman as I was initially.  He's not evil because he made an obnoxious, ego maniacal rant.  But he did tarnish Stanford's reputation.  Except among the flamethrowers.  They will be saying how great it is that finally someone from that boring place "keeps it real".  If that is reality, I don't want it.  Let me embrace my fantasy:  a Stanford legacy of grace and poise and sportsmanship and joy.

I would at this moment have no interest in having a drink with Sherman.  I wish him well and leave him to go about his way.  I would rather have a drink with just about any of the posters on this board.  Although I gotta say, wishing for Sherman to be hurt is really falling into the same emotional trap as Sherman himself.

No, you're right.  They are not directly comparable.  The moral failure of Tiger's transgressions is an aspect totally missing from The Rant and far more profound.  My comment was, though,  specifically related to my degree of embarrassment that they are each connected to Stanford.  I'm not particularly interested in having a drink with Tiger either.

Re: Richard Sherman = classless - CJ90 - 01-20-2014

I'm a brobdingnagian Richard Sherman fan.  I've met him a few times, and he was just a tremendous, friendly guy with me and my kids.  He does a great deal of charity work and has been great with youth in his old neighborhood.

Of course I didn't care for his conduct post-tip and his IV with Erin.  But I'm not going to let his adrenaline fueled rant (and/or the one involving Brady) cause me to think that he's a punk, an embarrassment to Stanford or worse.  A few minutes of bush league conduct doesn't remotely undo all the good things he's done and the person that he is.

It seems tempting and easy to see a person in black and white instead of shades of grey and to make sweeping judgments based on his/her best or worst moments, particularly when we don't know the person well and what we see amounts to soundbites.  But IMO, it would be a big mistake to judge Sherm on the basis of this incident or even the few cases where he's gotten carried away and launched into adrenaline-fueled rants, even if they were bush league.  They were ill-chosen words.  99.9%+ of the time, what Sherman says and, more importantly, what he does in the real world, are first class and role model worthy.  I'm pretty sure he does more good with his charity work than do the vast majority of people in this world, including most of the football fans who are fully condemning him as a person and not just condemning some discreet behavior of his.  I'd also wager that most people have done worse, adrenaline-fueled, heat of the moment type things in their lives than what Sherm did this evening, even if Sherm was on TV and had a (brobdingnagian) audience.  I'm quite sure I have, anyway.

Guilty as charged.  I feel conflicted about this episode.  I share feelings with both sides of this debate.  There are only two things I know for sure here:

1.  It was very funny.  Particularly a clueless Erin Andrews.

2.  The only opinion about this debate that I care about belongs to Terrence Alexander.  I checked young Terrence's twitter.  He seems to be siding with the Shermanator.

EDIT: on 2nd review, Miss Andrews appears to know what she's doing.  It appears that the producer was concerned about some FCC violations.  I don't think the Shermanator swears much.  I wish they kept rolling.

Re: Richard Sherman = classless - FarmBoy - 01-20-2014

Having now seen the "rant", I can't quite calibrate why everyone is getting so wrapped up on this. Yes, it was a bit WWF. No, it's not the way I want my kids to behave when they win a big game. Yes, I prefer Andrew Luck's style of winning more than Sherman's. But let's face it, few of us have "walked a mile" in Sherman's shoes. He's had a very different set of life experiences than most of us (okay, I shouldn't speak for most people here, but he's certainly had a different set of challenges from me.) He didn't try to injure Crabtree. He didn't use any foul language (at least not during the public interview). And he backed up his talk with his play (okay, the talk came after the fact, but still.) Sherman is a controversial character, but he plays great, creates great entertainment value, and does a lot of good things for the community he's from. I'm sure there are a lot of worse people representing Stanford University in the business, arts and entertainment world. But their antics go unseen so we can still hail them as models.

I'll continue to root for Sherman but tell my son that there are other ways to win and not be a jerk (see Andrew Luck).

Re: Richard Sherman = classless - Hulk01 - 01-20-2014

I tweeted this morning:

"I understand the reaction, football fans, but if you don't love him you don't know him.

Seconds later, Coy Wire retweeted this and added one word:

"Amen."

If you think he is classless, you don't know him.  Plus he is bright, generous, funny as hell.  You can make a long list without ever getting to "gifted, athletic, the best in the business."

A comparison to Tiger, to whom I have had some but less exposure, simply isn't apt.  They have little in common inlcuding their alleged missteps.  Tiger's transgressions were carefully planned, repetitive,  dishonest, and a betrayal of promises and vows that he made.  Richard's were none of those: They were spontaneous.  And his interviews just minutes later were pure Sherm and pure cool.

I am sincerely glad to hear that there are other facets of Richard Sherman that apparently dwarf his self-serving, self-aggrandizing performance after the game.  At the risk of drawing ire from those who think I am drawing moral equivalency between Sherman and Woods, I do wonder if people give Tiger any break in their moral judgments.  His charitable endeavors, I am fairly certain, dwarf those of Sherman.  Further, he has directly acknowledged his moral failure and made amends, both financial and personal, to those he harmed.  While he remains aloof, arrogant and unapproachable, he has not demonstrated any ongoing behavior problems.  I'm not personally attracted to people like Tiger and Richard, at least to the extent that I understand who they are from the limited, public information that I have.  Nonetheless, I do feel that the episodes surrounding them damaged Stanford to some degree.  To those who believe this might enhance our recruiting efforts with those who are disadvantaged who are impressed that Stanford embraces/empathizes with outbursts such as this, I would ask if they would like a team comprised of Richard Shermans behaving as he has behaved throughout his pro career.

P.S.  As I re-read the above I feel guilty for coming across as sanctimonious, a personal trait that I abhor.  I'm not a Sherman "hater".  He is an excellent athlete and, apparently, does many good things in the world.  I truly accept that.  I do choose who I spend time with and who I choose as role models.  Neither of these gentleman fill that role for me personally.

Re: Richard Sherman = classless - OutsiderFan - 01-20-2014

If Sherman went to Cal or USC, wouldn't people here be pillorying him in a savage way for his interview?  Nobody would be considering how great a guy he might be off the field, would they?

What's odd is this whole "we've never walked in his shoes so we can't judge him" attitude sounds far more UC-like than Stanford-like.  Whatever happened to uncompromising standards?  Would Sherman have been admitted to Stanford if that post-game rant were part of his application?

There are many good people who do bad things, but just because people to a lot of good, we don't as a society let bad deeds go unpunished.  There many people in prison who have done many good things.
