RE: FB -- LOUISVILLE GAME THREAD - thunder_chik - 11-16-2024

Had to leave for church before the end...highlight reels on YouTube only show the score tied at 35 all, then Stanford kicking a fg to win it. Entire OT before that missing.
Sorry I missed it, but WOWEE, what a comeback!

That's the most fun I've had at a Stanford home game in a long time. Wow, what a game!

I sort of expected to be leaving at half-time of a beat-down. Instead, I ended up high-fiving friends and strangers in the stands as Stanford pulled off an amazing fourth quarter comeback. Wow, so much fun!

All right now!

That’s because the game didn’t go to OT.

Believe it or not, there was no OT!

A Louisville defender committed one of the most boneheaded personal fouls I've ever seen with one second left, refusing to let go of the leg of an out-of-bounds Stanford player and then pushing him for good measure, all right in front of a ref.

As egregious and stupid as this foul was, it was bookended by two plays that were similarly awful if you are a Louisville fan. The Cardinals, after a time out, decided to try a Hail Mary on fourth-and-ten with 11 seconds left in regulation, which give Stanford the ball with five seconds left.

Then, after the personal foul call, a Louisville defender jumped offsides. Kenney would have had a 57-yard attempt had there been no offsides penalty, and it didn't look like the game-winning kick would have been good from five yards further out.

Truly, three plays that will go down in infamy for Louisville fans. But credit Kenney with the clutch kick, and the entire team and coaching staff for coming back when things really looked bleak in the third quarter.

He played TOUGH, having his best ever day passing* on a day when he was credited for 23 carries (getting pounded on many), and he played SMART, for the most part avoiding the temptation to throw it up for grabs.

Daniels displayed accuracy and touch on this throws today, and, while he'll never be Joe Montana, he played like an all-conference QB today.

*EDIT: Yeah, I forgot his stat line against Colorado. I think his passer rating today might be a tad higher than against Colorado, but I'm not sure.
He completed 67% of his passes. He was accurate on throws across the middle to Mosley, which hasn't been a big part of our offense. It may be a fluke, but today Daniels had "it". His one interception was on a 50/50 ball and therefore arguably not his fault. He put the ball where it was supposed to be. IMO Daniels actually threw to a non-primary receiver (Mosley) for a TD today. That is somewhat rare for him, but today he also utilized 6 different receivers. Also unusual. He still stares down receivers too much, but today it didn't cost him. IMO he indeed deserves praise.

Now he has to do it again next week :-).

Thanks for all the details! The highlight reel does not show how Stanford was able to get in position for the winning field goal, which was no "chip shot" by any means.

Best LSJU win since Tanner McKee led the upset over Oregon?

And, brings back great memories of the John Hopkins walk off FG in the 1991 Big Game, aided by the Cal penalty in the closing seconds. And the Nate Whitaker walk off FG vs. USC in 2010, aided by the USC penalty in the closing seconds.

Beat Cal! We want the Axe!

Larger point. Stanford scored 35 points to tie the game. The winning kick was a cherry on top of the sundae.

And the Ukropina FG to beat USB after a face mask penalty on Hogan and a slant reception to Cajuste.

RE: FB -- STANFORD 38 -- LOUISVILLE 35 - martyup - 11-16-2024

The last two defensive series were a thing of beauty.  We played like our hair was on fire.

This win is going to be so important to the morale of our team.  The team can now believe in themselves.  This was a very good team that they beat.

RE: FB -- STANFORD 38 -- LOUISVILLE 35 - TonyLima - 11-16-2024

ESPN has the game on Replay. I will post it on my Youtube channel sometime Monday with any luck.

RE: FB -- STANFORD 38 -- LOUISVILLE 35 - martyup - 11-16-2024

With 50 seconds to play, we were down 28-35.  We scored 10 points in 50 seconds.

With 5 seconds to play, we moved the ball from our own 45 to the L'ville 34 yard line, aided by 20 yards in penalties.

1990, not 1991.  I was definitely thinking about that game after the two Louisville penalties.

I think TT is assured a 3rd season with this win.

RE: FB -- STANFORD 38 -- LOUISVILLE 35 - newguy - 11-16-2024

just finished watching the game on my DVR.
i had given up after Louisville scored their 5th touchdown, but kept watching anyway.  what a game.

that may have been the 2015 Notre Dame game.  i'll never forget the expression on Ukropina's face as his teammates carried him off the field.

We were cracking up about the folks who left at halftime. Haven't had this much fun in years.

Also, instead of the fans rushing the field it was more like a slow ooze. Still, can't remember the last time there was that much joy in Stanford Stadium.

He deserves a lot of credit for this great win. And we had 25 players out with injuries!!! (I think TT said that in his post-game press conference.)

Which by my math says we gained exactly 1 yard on our own. Louisville gave us the other 20.

Agree. Going to overtime is never a sure thing, but we had to perform a minor miracle to even do that.
