2023 Sacramento State vs. Stanford Predictions Thread - george - 09-13-2023

Do we bounce back?  Will this game look similar to Jim Harbaugh's 2007 37-0 victory over San Jose State following the blowout loss to UCLA? Or more like Walt Harris' 2006 34-35 loss to San Jose State following the blowout loss to Oregon?

RE: 2023 Sacramento State vs. Stanford Predictions Thread - Mick - 09-13-2023

I think this will be the last win of the year for Stanford. 35-21.

or the 2005 game vs UC Davis....

My head and heart raging a fierce battle which is stuck on a draw. 35-35 tie
Game called after 2 overtimes and referees collapsing from dehydration.

Come on, Coach TT uses this as an opportunity to show that his offense can score. Big win, 48-17.

Stanford: Neither QB is great; one running back is effective; one great TE; weak O line; porous DBs; little blitz pressure. Big win? Dubious.

Taylor not only knows their Offense, he knows their players.  PREP.

We run the ball well on Hornets.  Balanced attack.
Our defense takes chances and gets some Turnovers.  34-16.
Daniels is back, but uncertainty keeps my score prediction below 42.
Karty is good for 2 FGs every game.

We cover the spread... which is "NA"

ESPN analytics currently gives us an 85.6% likelihood of winning with Stanford -6.5 and an O/U of 60.5 implying around 34-27

Is our Defense that bad... 27 points to an FCS team (a good one), where our coach knows their players capabilities?

Hey, George.

I'm curious how you concluded that La Jetee won the prediction contest ovr me.

La Jetee picked SacState 37-23. So he was 7 points off on Sac State's total point score and correct about Stanford's.

I predicted Sac State 28-SU 24. So I was 2 points off Sac State's total score and 1 point off of Stanfords.

So I don't understand how La Jetee won when s/he was a total of 7 points off and I was only a total of 3 points off.

Could you kindly explain that?

Thanks,

MV72018

The rules are here:

https://thecardboard.org/board/predictions.php

You didn't get the 3-point bonus for hitting one of the scores exactly. Bonus points really count for a lot -- I had to read the rules three times to understand that. They basically bump you up by that number of places. They don't just subtract from your error score.

CompSci explained it better than I could.  Keep in mind, I didn't make the rules, I was just responding to a logistical problem where members were tracking these results manually in a google sheet, so I enabled a way for the board software to do it automatically.

I couldn't find the original thread were the rules were made, but I did find this one that hints at what it used to be like.

I maintain the predictions widget because it's the best way for me to contribute to this community -- I value everyone's insights so much and I am nowhere near as thoughtful / articulate as you all.  But I don't have strong feelings of what the rules should be.  So if we want to change them I can make the necessary changes to the software.

Thank you for keeping predictions running, George!

One piece of maintenance that would help, is to fix the “predictions” view.  It’s supposed to show the set of all predictions for the current game but returns an error right now - “The specified thread does not exist”.

When I couldn’t remember my guess for the Sac St game I had to watch the scroll cycle through all guesses (three times!) as I couldn’t find it any other way and kept looking up to watch a play at the crucial moment in the cycle! Given the results, perhaps seeing less of the game was a blessing but still worth fixing.

So I've added your prediction to the widget in every predictions thread (see the top right on this page).  At the very least you will be able to click back on the thread during today's Arizona game to remember your prediction.

I still need to investigate what's going on w/ the current predictions link once the game starts...
