RIP Buddy Teevens - French Rage - 09-19-2023

https://home.dartmouth.edu/news/dartmouth-announces-death-buddy-teevens-79

Quote:Eugene F. “Buddy” Teevens ’79, the Robert L. Blackman Head Football Coach, died today, following injuries from a bicycle accident in March. He was 66.

“Our family is heartbroken to inform you that our beloved ‘coach’ has peacefully passed away surrounded by family. Unfortunately, the injuries he sustained proved too challenging for even him to overcome,” the Teevens family said in a statement. “Throughout this journey, we consistently relayed the thoughts, memories, and love sent his way. Your kindness and letters of encouragement did not go unnoticed and were greatly appreciated by both Buddy and our family.”

“We are confident and take comfort in the fact that he passed away knowing how much he was loved and admired.”

So, so sad. Condolences to the family.

Bike accidents claiming two Stanford coaches within a very short period of time. Dante passed quickly; Buddy much more slowly.

RE: RIP Buddy Teevens - PVTree - 09-19-2023

Very sad. A good man who tried to do the best he could. Would have been great for him (all of us) to have had more success at Stanford. RIP, coach.

RE: RIP Buddy Teevens - TrumpCard - 09-19-2023

Zach Hoffpauir might have wished he played for BT. A leader in addressing concussions head on. Maybe not optimizing tackling to cause the most pain, but the low impact practices definitely reduced exposure to brain injuries.

McKenwood - McKenwood - 09-19-2023

Nice man. Wish he had chosen better assistants at Stanford. He could recruit.

RE: RIP Buddy Teevens - Mick - 09-19-2023

Very sorry to hear about Buddy. I had a 45 minute conversation with him right after he took the HC position. Delightful man.  My condolences to his family and to the Dartmouth community.

I'd like to add another voice to the chorus of those who affirm that Buddy Teevens was an incredibly decent, friendly, upbeat, open, and thoughtful person. It was very good to see him have such success at Dartmouth after his tenure at Stanford. I am deeply saddened to learn of Buddy's death. I will think about it every time I go out for a bike ride. Tragic way to go. I know this is purely anecdotal, but since the pandemic, I have the impression that people's driving has gotten worse: more speeding, much more impatience, more rage, more risky moves, more going through stop signs by both cars and bicyclists, etc. Driving and biking defensively makes even more sense these days.

I wish his boss (Ted Leland) could/would have insisted on it. Still, it may have been a stylistic thing. The father of a player told me before the Boston College game ('02) how concerned he was about the lax practices compared to Willingham.  Teevens finally found his bliss, however. That's more than a lot of coaches can say.

As Goethe observed, life is also too short to drink bad wine.

An awfully nice guy, who was always more Ivy than Division I.

This is sad news. In my handful of conversations with him, Buddy was always friendly and engaging. He passed away far too young.

Fascinating data and thanks. By all accounts, Teevens was a good man.  His coaching underscores how much more difficult it is to win an a Power 5 program than a step down in the Ivy League for example. Same game but a different world.

Dartmouth has named its football stadium after Coach Teevens. The Manning brothers and their dad Archie, close friends of Buddy, mentioned it during the MNF telecast.

He was a sweetheart of a guy. Talked with me for 45 minutes just prior to coming here, to talk about his plans for Stanford football.

I always wondered...they were 4-7 his last season, losing three games by three points (including to #1 USC and #23 Arizona State) and one game by five points. He was close to a bowl game, he was. Of course, that 41-6 loss to Cal didn't help much...

Buddy was better than Harris no question

Yeah, I think we were all rooting for Buddy to succeed and when he went 4-2 in 2004 with the losses being close ones to U$C and ND, it looked like he just might be getting it done. Then we lose the next five games in a row.
