Dubs win. Steph with some amazing shots. I think Kuminga would help them defensively, especially rebounding. I know he's a little out of favor but I didn't see him on the bench. Anybody?
PS: Couldn't find the old thread.

There's an old "NBA Discussion" thread, but I don't remember a long lasting Warriors thread.

I watched a few games this season (not the Houston playoff game) with a friend of mine who's a D2 college coach. His opinion was that the Warrior strain of who stays/who gos and who plays/who sits is all about basketball instincts with physical ability in a clear second place. All the Warriors who stayed and succeeded going back to Kerr's earliest days as the Warriors' coach were players who had superb basketball instincts, or high basketball IQ if you will. Butler has it, Steph has it, Draymond has it, Podz (despite his physical limitations) has it. Not unlike Kerr as a player, BTW. It's why Wiggins and Kuminga and Wiseman and Poole were expendable. Kuminga's still only 23, and plays solid defense, but the Warriors don't need him this year, and he'll be a restricted free agent next year. He won't draw much in the open market, they'll resign him relatively cheaply.
They didn't need him last night. W's are now 4-2 against Houston this year. Moody, incidentally, has developed solid instincts and excellent defense. It's why he starts and plays 28 minutes. They overused their studs last night, Butler and Curry played 42 and 40 minutes, Draymond played 37. They can't do that much. Houston outrebounded them like crazy, Podz was their leading rebounder with 8 (he was +17). GP2 played well but injury prone. Still...#7 seed beats #2 seed on the road by double digits...impressive.
Just a side note: Steph's brother Seth Curry won the NBA's three-point percentage title by making 45.6% of his three-point attempts. He's had an interesting career...he's played for eight teams in 11 years and has never played two full seasons in a row for any one team. He's not a great defender, his career offensive rating (112) is slightly better than his career defensive rating (110).

When your coach doesn’t trust you, you sit. He can’t play at the same time as Butler. They’re too similar offensively, and it kills their spacing. And he’s not getting any time even in the few minutes Butler sits. The fact that Kerr gives minutes to Santos and Post and not Kuminga, tells you all you need to know.
He’ll be gone after this season.

Wiggins has his issues, basketball IQ isn’t one of them. He’s a plus defender among things.

There is almost no chance Kuminga is on this team next year. They'll sign and trade him to whoever offers him the biggest contract.

Now that we have a Warriors thread, let me put in a plug for Eric Apricot's great YouTube channel with his "Explain" series (originally "Explain one play"), at
https://youtube.com/@ericapricot. I've learned a lot from it about how the Warriors' plays and actions work, as well as some about their defense.
The series started on the DubNationHQ channel at
https://youtube.com/@dubnationhq a few years ago. It's worthwhile going back and watching the early vids that mostly explain just one play in detail, drawing examples from multiple games over time. The more recent videos are excellent too but are more in the style of explaining several things that happened in the latest game.

Agreed. It's a bit of a head scratcher for fans (like me) who see limited players who do ONE THING well like Moody, Payton, and Hield getting minutes while the more talented and athletic Kuminga can't get off the bench.
Kerr looks at it differently. Kuminga plays the same position as Butler and does not have the court skills to adjust his play to fit with Butler's game. Kerr doesn't believe they can both be on the floor together in the play-offs. With Butler playing 42 minutes in Game 1 against the Rockets, Kuminga becomes a very limited player in Steve Kerr's eyes.

I agree with much of the discussion above, but have always rooted for JK to succeed. I also agree that a sign and trade arrangement is most likely. But I'd prefer him sticking with the Dubs because he has improved alot. It's tough to insert him now when in the playoffs and, given his injury, he didn't have time to mesh with Butler.
But, did anyone see him on the bench? I didn't.

He was said to be dressed for the game and in the post-game locker room by the guys from the “Warriors Plus-Minus post-game podcast. (Kawakami and Slater).

It's been mentioned he was mostly standing in the tunnel rather than sitting on the bench.

I agree that JK has the tools to succeed in the NBA, but probably not within the Warriors system. He just lacks the intuitive understanding of the read and react style the warriors play. Incidentally this is an area where moody has really improved. He used to be a step slow in keeping the offense moving. Now when he gets the ball it's either an immediate pass, immediate shot, or attacking a close out/advantage situation. Moody is also a good on ball and team defender. JK is good on ball, but doesn't play defense within the team concept well. Incidentally this is a big reason why our D has been number 1 since the all star break. Wiggins is a better on ball defender then jimmy, but Jimmy is an elite team defender while Wiggins is not. This combined with fewer Kuminga minutes and more moody/GP2/podz minutes, plus the general increase in intensity is why our defense has gotten much better.
The ideal outcome for us and JK is a sign and trade, i'd love to target Cam Johnson on the nets as we need size and spacing. If we can't get him, ironically trading JK to the heat to get Wiggins back could be a win.
As for this series, I really like the Warriors chances. If the refs call a tight game, it favors us since Jimmy will live at the line and Steph will feast if they aren't allowed to bear hug him for 48 minutes. If the refs let both teams play prison ball like in game 1, I still like our chances since Steph and Jimmy are elite tough shot makers, while the Rockets only have Sengun who can score buckets through physical defense.
There will undoubtedly be 1 or 2 games where they hit 3s at an above average rate and we commit too many turnovers in the face of their ball pressure, but I'm thinking Warriors in 5.

but no! buddy! steph! jimmy! defense!

Here is a highly unlikely sequence of 7 numbers.
2, 5, 17, 15, 4, 0, 33.
Buddy Hield's points scored in the 7 games vs. the Rockets!

Best of all, the Warriors have the Timberwolves' number. They lost the first game they played against them this season, then won three straight, by 8, 10 and 1.
In the wins, the Warriors had very eclectic players. In the second win, the starters were Curry, Wiggins, Schroder, TJD and Anderson; three of which are no longer on the team and TJD hardly plays. Santos, Schroder, TJD and Wiggins started the third win. Podz played well in second win, Draymond, Moody weren't available.
I think bench strength will be important in this series. Looney does well against the T'Wolves, so does GP2. Buddy Hield played well against them, as did Moody. And of course, the Warriors didn't have Butler for any of the wins. I think they take this series in six.

An interesting item regarding the upcoming Warriors-Timberwolves series…
For the first time since Steve Kerr became the head coach, the Warriors are underdogs in a playoff series. This breaks a string of 27 consecutive series in which GS was the favorite.

Kuminga makes too many mental mistakes. Case in point. Game 2 Houston has front court sideline OOB. He’s on in bounder who passes it near 28 ft line. Kuminga follows ball with eyes, loses eye contact with man who cuts straight to basket, gets return pass. Lay up with Kuminga trailing. Thats as basic a defensive off ball principle as there is - don’t lose man/ball vision. It’s a mistake a HS player doesn’t make.
Kerr pulled him shortly thereafter.
Kuminga needs to go to a 30-52 team. Get minutes. And learn.

Another interesting factoid, the Timberwolves are one of just two Western Conference teams that have yet to play the Warriors in the postseason in the Curry era. Can you name the other?
