I just don't see how a firing is warranted. If he had done anything more than he did, yes, a firing would be warranted.
Regardless of anything that precipitated the altercation, Howard didn't make a fist to punch, and he didn't really slap the guy either. Most importantly, it was one swipe and that was it. If he had made a fist and punched and/or followed up by really going after the guy, firing would have already happened.
The Head Coach can't be physically going after people. Just can't happen, but given it was pretty benign, and Howard is not known for being a guy who can't control his temper or otherwise have these incidents, the behavior can be punished so he is held accountable and it can be used as a teaching moment, but I don't think a firing is warranted. Just suspend 5 games without pay and move on.
