Perhaps it’s time to put away college football. It certainly raises the question of what a university should be doing. Somehow USF, Santa Clara, Gonzaga and many others have survived without their students getting their brains bashed.
When SCU finally dropped football, the level of ball was D2-average. I remember SCU playing San Jose State for the last time in 1982, and they were down 30-0 at the half, en route to a 40-0 loss. It was not good football. That's not to say they didn't have the occasional NFL-ready player, but most of them were far from it. In their last few seasons, I watched a very good passing game with the QB, TE and WRs playing at a high level, either a long NFL career (Brent Jones), or a long CFL career or invitations to NFL camps. But it didn't hold a candle to Stanford's passing game, even at Stanford's very worst.
In short, I didn't miss SCU's program. When I was in school, I attended few SCU games, the skill level just wasn't that high. But I would definitely miss Stanford football. I don't want to do without it.
