Perhaps it’s time to put away college football. It certainly raises the question of what a university should be doing. Somehow USF, Santa Clara, Gonzaga and many others have survived without their students getting their brains bashed.
The demise of college football is underway. The phenomenon of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and its relationship to head blows sustained in football sounded the eventual death knell for college football. Of course, it will take longer for it to be discontinued in the South where football is worshipped (see the phenomenon of H. Walker in GA) and in the NFL where billions of bbucks are at stake. Needless to say the compelling evidence of the linkage between football and CTE will be doggedly denied, as it was by many for years in the case of cigarette smoking. Nonetheless, for college football. the countdown to termination has already started.
College soccer too? And is society okay with sports -- like boxing and MMA -- that clearly cause CTE, as long as the participants aren't affiliated with colleges?
Although the data we're seeing on CTE disturbs me a lot, I wonder whether people actually will steer their kids away from the sport, much less whether fans will leave in large numbers. The national COVID response has made me rethink whether people are all that concerned with their health or with doing anything to preserve it. We seem to move closer to Idiocracy every day.
